    Traxide USI-160 charging question

The mighty D4 is a shopping trolley most days, so when I know I've got a trip coming up, I'll put it on a charger for about a week beforehand.

I use the rear Anderson from the Traxide kit, and usually works just fine. The charger's on a simple timer so it runs overnight, as should be clear in the images below.
(And I checked before charging that the in-cab switch was in SHARED mode - switch away from the LED)

However, the first night, I got this:
Aux charged up, Crank sat where it was

The next night, Aux and Crank got charged up together - which is what I was expecting the night before.

I thought that both batteries would always charge up?

I'm curious to know what's going on - perhaps Tim or someone edcuate me?

    Cheers

Hi Redtail and I am not sure why the isolator did not turn on, but I would check all your connections and pay particular attention to the earth wire on the isolator, where it connects to earth.

If it is earthed to the top bolt on the isolator where it is mounted to the bracket, it might be worth cutting the earth wire and add some wire to it and earth where the auxiliary battery is earthed.

Over the years I have had a few customers have problems where earth the through the tray either didn’t work or only work periodically, so moving it might correct the issue.

I recall doing that a couple of years ago.
I did drop a new SSB battery in about a month back. I may well have disturbed something.
    Best I check it.

I thought, and correct me if Im wrong....

the traxide wouldnt charge from AUX to the main battery if the main battery was low enough in charge to cause a disconnect (both batteries at the same voltage) or if the aux battery was at a higher state of charge than the main.

Hi Dave and with the older SC80s and USI-160s, if the In-Cab switch was set towards the LED ( Ignition mode ) or if the vehicle had not been driven for more than 3 days, then you would not be able to charge from the auxiliary battery to the cranking battery.

With all the newer Traxide isolators, regardless of whether the isolator was on or off ( disconnected ) you can charge both batteries via the Anderson plug at the rear.

The only time you can not charge from one battery to the other, ( in either direction ) is if the isolator is set to LOCKED, and Redtail posted he had it in Shared mode ( so the isolator was not LOCKED off ) and he had driven the vehicle just a few hours before trying to charge, so again, my guess is a bad earth wire connection.

I checked the earth connection, already attached to the inside panel (and not the battery tray). It was clean and fast, but the spade joiner I'd used to lengthen the cable looked a bit dirty, so I removed it and joined the wires with a wrap and solder, re-insulated and tied it all down.

    Not been an issue since.

As a point of interest, I put the USI-160 and full kit in the car in April 2018.
Tim replaced the 160 under warranty a year later (April 2019), and it's been running since then, roughly 110,000km now.
It's seen out 2 yellow top Optima batteries, and I'm now on my second SSB HVT-70D - the previous one having lasted just over 3 years.
