D3 Safari Snorkels

It appears that having a Safari snorkel is not a guarantee that you can go paddling in safety - witness the D3 I saw at ULR about a month ago with the body off (to remove the drowned engine). It looked as if the snorkel had leaked where it joins the Land Rover air box - possibly a poor installation but worth bearing in mind whatever you choose....check the installation!

I spoke to people both at Land Rover Experience and the factory last year and their view was that provided it was sealed to the body, it was perfectly adequate - if you keep to the wading limits...

Hope that doesn't add too much confusion....

Sorry - re-reading this, I may not have been clear in my last comment, concerning Land Rover Experience etc, in that they were obviously referring to the Land Rover RAI (Raised Air Intake).

But the wading limits are 700mm, so of course you are OK below that, RAI or not.

I've not measured it, but I'm sure the bottom of the intake hole in the wing is >700mm from the ground (or river bed).

700mm isn't necessarily 700mm.

If there is a flow upstream on the intake side it'll be deeper in effect.

If you hit a hole it'll drop in.

If you stop the bow wave will cease to exist and with it the dip around the front quarter panel.

Snorkels -- cheap insurance. You'd be mad not to IMHO. These engines are not a five-grand replacement you can source from a wrecker.

Not disputing that - I was just laughing at the fact that the snorkel doesn't raise the wading depth.

I would not expect LR to say it does no matter what you do.:angel:

I fitted the Safari to my TDV6 in 2007, have had no problems with it. I was surprised at the dust tracks the genuine LR 90 degree rubber bends had in them so I am definitely of the opinion Safari is the way to go.

The other issue is that when entering water your diffs get to cool down very quickly meaning if the diff breathers are under water you get to suck it in, not air. I have asked my dealer where the breathers are located only to get confused responses, this may also contribute to the 700mm limit??.

D3 TDV6 doesn't need aftermarket breathers, LR got that right.
