I always recommend leaving the system on auto to heat, as this ensures that windscreens don't fog up, as the air con removes unnecessary moisture from the air as the air heats up.
So, to heat, aircon on if any chance of condensation forming on the windows.
There is a known (minor) issue with the D3 heating system which I call the "cold feet syndrome"! Basically it doesn't pipe enough heat to the front passenger footwells when set to automatic mode. You can resolve this yourself by sending more air to the footwells with the manual buttons / fan control.
LR know about this, and as for nearly everything related to the D3 there is a software fix that cures the problem if you mention it to your dealer.
