To buy an extended warranty or not?

Had almost the exact same repair to my RRS last week, the seal between the gearbox & transfer box was weeping, so a £15 part but a days labour to pull the box and replace it. Luckily when the box came out, they found the flange seal was also knackered which necessitated the replacement of the flange, its bearing and the seal. Thankfully the Land Rover extended warranty here in the UK picked up the tab.

I'll not mention the new throttle body it also paid for last week :cool:

You Bastard. Why did you have to mention gearboxes? Mine lost the ability to automatically change gear today (tiptronic worked) and finished the short trip with lots of warning lights.

I bought a 3 year extended warranty when the standard warranty expired on my 2005 D3 TdV6 HSE, and two months later the primary air compressor failed resulting in a $2,500 bill that cost me nothing. So the warranty, which cost $2,400 was now paying me back. When I sold my D3 (to buy a D4) after 4 years and 65,000 kms, I got 80% of what I paid for it (bought it for $80k, sold for $56k), and it was the warranty that had people queueing up to buy my car. I have never had such fantastic retained value on any car I have owned previously, including Porsches and Mercedes. So my advice is to spend the money and take out the warranty, it will pay itself back in peace of mind, reduced repair bills and increased retained value when you sell the car.

My dead gearbox was actually a failed brake light bulb creating erroneous error messages!

Hard to believe...

Yes, it is a 2006 V8 (with a new brake light globe).

My 2008 SE TDV6 came out of warranty at the end of March. I purchased the two year Land Rover extended warranty (cost about $2300 ex tax) just prior. In early April I was up in the Newnes State Forest with a few others from this forum and the EPB started to squeal. It eventually stopped and appeared to be OK. A few weeks later it ceased to function:o.

Had it into the dealer yesterday and got a phone call:
Dealer - The lease company has approved you repair, but we thought we'd better let you know what is being done and the cost. We have to replace the EPB module.
Me - Doesn't the extended warranty cover that?
Dealer - Good question hang on
Dealer (back) - which extended warranty
Me - Land Rover
Dealer - Yes it is covered
Me - so how much was it going to be
Dealer - $1700.00

So far I'm pretty pleased with the extended warranty:D

Not a LR product but I've just bought a new car for my wife, '11 Ford Mondeo Titanium. I've taken out an extended warranty through the lease company NLC. I've also compared it to the Ford warranty underwritten by Swann Insurance. Has anyone had experience with these for their other cars?

I find both to have more holes than swiss cheese!
Both require $100 claim fee per claim.
Failure caused or contributed to by fire/storm/flood/corrosion/hail not covered
Any claim attributed to or contributed to overheating
Interior trim not covered
Any failure attributed to poor fuel quality (detonation included)
Diagnostic costs
Parts used may be like quality and kind, commensurate with the age and odo reading. Remanufactured or used parts may be used.
Co-payment from owner may be necessary where a part replaced under the warranty returns said vehicle to a value or condition greater than that prior to service work.

I've read the past nine pages of this thread, most agree the policy's are flawed and skewed against the vehicle owner, there is usually pressure or argument required from either the owner or repairer against insurer. But also, most repairs seem to be covered.

Think it sums up Insurance products quite well really!

The one through LR is Allianz and is a lot better.

Just been speaking to my Dealer about Allianz . They're turning into
a total PITA to deal with . Folk purchasing the LR policy are being
treated with contemp since the policy is not being honoured as a
LR extention ( no roadside assist being provided etc ) and they're
trying to avoid paying for diagnosis , repairs involving parts etc
ie. compressor dryer ; whilst not wanting to pay for the whole
article either. If these Companies don't want to honour their
obligations , they should stop selling BS policies for big bucks.
They're getting near to fraudulent behaviour :mad:
