I've got an L320 TDV8 being shipped over from Perth currently. It's got the aforementioned 285/22s on it and will get LT285/60R18 BFGs on Compos pretty much as soon as it lands. The head said just put on 265/65s but the heart said "Yeah, but have you seen how good they look with these fat tyres?" And it already had the 285s so I struggled with the idea of going narrower. Plus I like wider tyres on narrower rims for offroading (rim damage, bead packing, etc) and they were the same price. At the end of the day this isn't a fully rational purchase anyway...

Yeah, that's exactly my dilemma. The BFG 285/60R18 have an Diameter of 799mm, it would be interesting to hear how those work on on the RRS as far as fit and rubbing is concerned.

Based on the experience of many others here (and other forums) it seems there may be some slight rubbing on plastics under heavy articulation and/or tight turning. There is a metal seam at the back that may need to be folded over (under the splash-liner). The vehicle should still be OK to limp home if you lose the air and it's on the bump stops (just). ~Ø31.5" / 800mm is considered the limit to get away with that and it should still go into the spare cavity (albeit deflated and with a decent shove). I'm a big fan of lots of sidewall so I was always going to lean towards the largest tyre on the smallest rim. So I'm starting 'safe' with the 285/60. The extra width of the tyre means the sidewalls are inclined outwards and that aids rim protection and also plushness of ride, at the detriment to sharpness of handling.

Gordon has a tyre fitment guide under the Compomotive section of his GoE website. And he runs 275/65s (~Ø32.1" / 815mm) on his (with a bit of light metal-work and plastic trimming). For 285/60 fitment, refer - http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/a34e48...52bcd03ff4.pdf

For the larger 275/65 size, refer - http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/a34e48...4f5dd70cfb.pdf

Disclaimer: Note this is all based on others reported experience, and there is some variation between tyres and vehicle build. So please do your own due diligence and apply your own acceptance criteria as to what level of compromise you accept.

As an after thought, does anyone know if snow chains will fit on 265/60R18s on a RRS?

Well.... 285/60s fit on Compomotive rims. They are about 1/2" larger profile (from sidewall out and also dia) than the 265/60s. So, if you use a 1/2" chain (15mm or less, low-profile) and you keep the speed down, and don't heavily articulate and limit steering lock, and you are on Compo rims (offset) you might be OK. No idea, but how's that for logic?

The logic is sound and aligns with my way of thinking. That said, after reading some of the posts re. snow chains in the D3/D4 section you would believe that you would never get snow chains on uness you are running 20" or less OEM rims with stock tyres.

As much as I would love 285s I'm going to have to go with the 265 ST/MAXXs. I don't think there will be a hope in hell of getting snow chains on 285s.

I run 275/65/18 STT Pro with compomotive rims. Looks great and had to do all the trimming etc that Gordon advises. Still slight rubbing on full lock.

They're 820mm diameter. I want! I actually didn't think there would be any chance of those fitting. No chance of getting snow chains on them though.
