    Buying a used RR Sport

    Hi All,

I'm looking at buying a used 2007 onwards Range Rover Sport or Discovery 3 or 4 with something that has less than 200k KMs. My budget would be 20k after I sell my 1995 Defender 110.

I am wondering what things I should look out for. I know I am not going to get a really low km vehicle in my price range but have heard good things about the tdv6, both the 2.7l and the 3L.

I would be interested in a V8 but just not sure how I would cope with fuel consumption as I have a heavy right foot as it is (let alone with the roar of a Rover V8 under it).

I am wondering what things I should be looking out for apart from bad airbags and compressor.

Any help and tips on getting a good Rangie or d3/d4

There’s also the tdv8. The MY10 which is last of the L320 tdv8s is very nice.

The 4.4 Jag v8 and 4.2 SC Jag v8 are very well regarded for reliability and torque (particularly the SC).

Air bag/strut replacement is definitely to be expected with a L320 of that age.
    L322 tdv8 poverty pack - wow

I'd love a TDV8 but they are hard to find in my price range.

What are the Jag v8s like on fuel and engine longevity like?

    Cheers

    Buying a used RR Sport

I’ve never owned a 4.4 v8, but official combined consumption is about 15lt/100km. However, servicing is apparently cheaper.

Another lower cost option is a D3 with a Ford 4.0 v6, which surprisingly use more fuel than the 4.4 v8. But these were made up to 2009 whereas the 4.4 in the L319/320 ended in 2006 I believe.

    L320 problems

Have owned two L320’s now, certainly not an expert on what to look for but here are a few comments.

Both mine have been TDV8’s and I took a few V6’s for a drive before buying. If your budget allows I would certainly go for the V8 Diesel. They are really like driving totally different vehicles. Never driven a petrol variant so can’t comment there.

Equipment level of the TDV8 seems to be better wrt brakes and suspension, not to mention the power and torque from the 3.6 V8, but you will see they dropped the Brembo brake package in 2010. Most important thing would be to have a LR specialist look over the car, and then make sure you keep the servicing up to date and jump on any error’s you get as they can be expensive to repair.

    On my 2008 the main issues were;
Did a couple of suspension air bags,
Air compressors for the suspension on these are too small and will overheat and fail- unless it has been upgraded as most would have been by now.
Engines are fantastic providing they are well maintained. There is an issue with a coolant pipe/ housing that needs to be replaced. Turbo intercooler hoses will split from time to time and if not diagnosed soon enough can lead to turbo failure. (Had to do turbo’s on my first one and that alone can be over $10,000 to fix as the body needs to come off the car.) Starter motor went on mine, and once again this is not an easy fix, not quite body off but from memory front suspension needs to come out.
Front suspension oil bushings seem a bit fragile as I have done a few of them as well. Bought this one with 160,000kms on it and had over 270,000 when I sold it.

2010 has had similar suspension issues but was bought with much lower km’s and no real other gremlins on it yet. 2010 upgrade is minor external but a full refresh on the interior. I think this was also about the last year you could get the V8 in this model.

Both cars had the ECU remapping done and would typically return 10-11 l/100kms on the highway and would creep up to 12-13 around town.

In summary- find yourself a good workshop, be prepared to stump up for repairs and it will reward you with a fantastic drive.

    Good Luck
    James

A few TDV6 d3's are popping up for around 20k with some high mileage vehicles going for less.

This 4.4 looks in good condition with very low price.
