    TDV8 Chirp/squeal

Hi there. I have a 2008 sport 3.6 V8 diesel with 168 thou miles on it. It started making a squeal or squark from the front of the engine and I thought it was a belt slipping so I replaced a tensioner and both belts but noise still there then I thought it was a idlrr or the viscous fan so to isolate I removed both belts and fan. I started it up and noise still there. It's kind of intermittent but there all the time. Its bad if you go down a hill and as you start to climb up the other side it starts squealing and then eventually takes up, sounds just like a fan belt but obviously it is not. Beginning to wonder is it a turbo clapping out? I held a long screwdriver on turbo by front right wheel to my ear as someone revved it to make the sound and I cant hear it coming thru. Did the same on a rocker cover bolt and I could hear the sound but didn't sound close. It sounds external to me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

There could be a small split in an I/C to throttle body hose which is a common occurrence but if so then it will soon become a big split. The noise will only occur when the turbos are working at least a little.

I'm going with exhaust manifold or turbo flange leak.

Hey thanks for the input. So how can I trace or isolate the throttle body to intercooler pipe? Are you talking about the top hoses off the intercooler? Its such a ***** to see anything down in around the tuurbo. Should I try and disconnect it at the cooler end and run it to see if it makes the sound?

I was referring to the top hoses. However I was reminded of the TD5's squeak from the exhaust manifold when studs are broken but hadn't read about such problems with the 3.6 TDV8, although JustinC obviously has encountered exhaust leaks.

Ok so if it was exhaust manifold would that be a body off job to fix?

Hi, I had a similar "bird chirping" on one of my 320 TDV8's. Turned out to be a small stainless steel flex pipe in the EGR system had split. To replicate the intermittent behaviour once up to temp and chirp was evident during initial throttle opening, if you put it into drive when parked and with the brakes on go through a few cycles of a few seconds of full throttle and let the waste gate open (making sure it doesn't launch through your garage wall)- I guess this also functions the EGR system and the noise will go away for a while. The fix for mine was to blank the ERG completely, blanking plates plus software, rather than replace the split pipe as I had already done the ECU upgrade.
That is of course once you have eliminated the standard split intercooler hose that they all seem prone to.

So I had some spare time this evening, started up the rangy and thought I'd run it up and see if I could track down the noise. I let it warm up for about 15 minutes, couldn't get it to chirp, took it for a drive and still no noise. How can this be after it was doing it really bad only a few day's ago and hasn't been used since. This has been a long running problem thats only getting worse then today nothing. I'm sure it will be there next time I use it. Any ideas?

So took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed as an exhaust manifold gasket leak. They took the body off and had the manifold skimmed, problem solved but....... I pay the $4000 dollar bill get in and go home. It was a cold afternoon so had heater on. Next hot day I turn on aircon and its not going. They said on the invoice about degas and regas of aircon and a small note said TX valve. So I ring them and they tell me tx valve is faulty and thats probably seized the pump as well! They never mentioned any of this to me when I collected it, I was shocked. So they outsourced the ac work to a specialist. They are telling me its just bad luck and now I have to get it sorted. Seems very bad luck as the ac was working perfectly before they carried out the repairs. Question is could they have done something wrong to cause this? Like starting up the vehicle before it was regassed? I understand the compressor doesn't have a clutch as such and is electronically controlled. Any advice? Thanks
