2007MY L320, with the 600W Harman Kardon, factory navigation.

Got the special kit from the UK to keep the factory touchscreen and instrument cluster menu functional.
Ditched the factory amp and fitted a $50 amp to run the subwoofer, the doors speakers are run from the internal amp of the head unit.

If the car didn't have factory navigation would have been a bit easier.

If the car had the base audio without fibre optics would have been much easier, but maybe a bit more expensive if we had to add a subwoofer.

If the car had the Logic7 it would have been a toss up between keeping the awesome sound, or updating the head unit...

And just as an FYI, if you have Rear Seat Entertainment, there is no way to keep it functional if you fit an aftermarket head unit, even keeping the factory touchscreen, the rear seat entertainment will be lost...

There is an Apple CarPlay / Android Auto kit available now that works with the factory touchscreen, so that would be another option for those cars with factory nav, rather than swapping the head unit.

Oh and one last thing, there were a handful of cars built with factory navigation, and base audio, so no fibre optics.
So if you have factory navigation you should always check under the drivers seat for the amplifier with fibre optics before you buy stuff...
Is the nav and 4x4 info fully retained ?, I was lucking not having either so I gained a lot in my D3.

The navigation still works however with the standard kit the sound from the nav is lost (the spoken directions I mean).
You can get an add-on which will provide the sound from the factory nav through an additional speaker.
But again it's an additional expense which may or may not be worthwhile, depending on what you want to have.
The 4x4i screen still works as before, but as I said if you have rear seat entertainment, that no longer works, same goes for TV, or watching DVD's on the nav screen (6-stacker in the boot that comes with RSE).

So again it really comes down to what you are starting with, what you want to keep, and what you want to have.
For a fully-loaded car that has Logic7 and rear seat entertainment, a head unit swap will lose you a lot of functionality.

Hi, and thanks for sharing your experience. Just curious, did you lose the front doors speakers (both midrange and tweeters)? I bought and installed a fitting kit from the UK which also retained the OEM nav display as you explained, it might be the same as what you've used (from what you explained). But my RRS had the Logic7 amp. The kit came with a bypass wiring harness that was supposed to retain ALL speakers except the center one on the dash, and obviously the subwoofers, but it seems that the front doors speakers are not working.

Hi! I have factory navigation screen (don't care about navigation), and would like to retain the 4x4 info, and have the screen work. Do you have a link to the special kit from the UK to keep factory touchscreen functional?

I am going to get an Apple CarPlay head unit, and install two amps and speakers from the old D2.

Do you foresee any issues doing this?

    Thanks!
