    RRS TDV8

    Hi all,

I had a charging system error message pop up on the instrument panel and this was accompanied by a whining noise in the engine bay.

After weeks of intense research online and shopping for tools from spanners to coupling wrenches I was able to replace the alternator that had been condemned by a multimeter test.

However, the whining noise is now gone as is the warning message on the instrument display screen but there is now a new type of noise. It is more like a hissing noise. More like a high pressure hissing that you hear when a water or steam pipe pops.

This noise only comes alive when I floor the accelerator while the car is in motion and not when stationary.

I decided to remove the fan and belts to inspect the pulleys but all looked okay. To rule out other possibilities I replaced the accessory drive belt.

    The noise is still there.

Does any one know what could be causing this?

I can’t see any leaky pipes or fluid.

    Thanks

Definitely a boost leak, first suspect with those are the 2 top intercooler hoses. Check them for splits

    I agree with JC.

How do you rate time/difficulty removing fan etc to change belt? I’m replacing my AC compressor, and decided to replace belt and pulley wheels too.

    Thanks for the tip JC.

Those 2 hoses look perfect and the clips are screwed on tight.
Any other places I should be looking?

To release the alternator, I had to loosen a nut that released the RH turbo charger intake tube and provided a gap large enough to allow my socket to reach the alternators two lower bolts. Could this tube be the source of the leak? The black tube is connected to the MAF sensor outlet pipes that run off the air cleaner housing.
This same black tube runs the length of the RHS onto a metallic hose and that part has no clip. It’s as though it sits on it and I am not sure how tight that connection should be.

    Hi Rar110,

It took me several tools and a cumulative 5-6 hours to unscrew the fan, partially drain the coolant and remove the coolant hoses.
    It isn’t difficult, just fiddly.

    Thanks.

The tube that runs the length of the motor to the turbo could be the crank case vent.
