    Cape York

    Hi guys,
    Next year I plan to do Cape York in my L320 TDV6.
    I last did it in 1983 in a Series 2A.
    What are the top 10 things to do to prepare this vehicle in your various expert views?
    I have 20" wheels and know I need to change this.
    Has anyone done the trip and like to share the vehicle-specific details?

    Hi mate. If you do the Old Tele Track you need a snorkel. If you do it solo a winch is a must unless you bypass harder climbs like Palm Creek. A good diagnostic tool is a good idea (I had a mate in a D3 whose gearbox had issues with water in a sensor - a scan tool would have identified the issue (locking of the Centre Diff) and he could have corrected it (the mechanics up there don't have LR diagnostics). A UHF is very handy but otherwise a Sat phone if doing the OTT.

    forsayth

    last week enjoyedthe many long tracks south of forsayth,nobody out there, would be impassable in the wet 70km hard going low low and some rock crawl mode, do not like the latter
    4500km in the 5 days, great camping far from people, Cobboled gorge is wall to wall caravans, like lemmings, grey nomads flock together,
    cannot seem to delete image or rotate sorry

    I did Cape York in 2014, I had the RAI fitted and sealed for the trip to avoid water ingress, took a 2nd spare wheel/tyre, and got on sale or return a whole load of spares from my LR dealer in case I got stuck for parts.
    The spares were mainly belts, filters, fuses, bulbs etc. UHF radio, sat phone

    so what you want to do is go and get yourself a set of the AYG8108's wrap some reasonable to good AT/MT rubber (I recommend the BFG AT2 or Maxxis 980) on them then bolt them on...

    to a series or a perentie or any other vehicle that bolt pattern fits,

    then take that instead.

    On the wheels front I have the LR 19” off-road wheels shoed with GG AT’s , It handled the OTT with
    zero drama, Tuff ant do a steel 18” that fits 2007-13 RRS,which may give you more options on the tyres.

    • *Really strong* recovery points F&R. You get stuck in a river and it can take a massive snatch to get you out - we had 2 vehicles snatching simultaneously at one stage.
    • Mud tyres with lots of sidewall. Sidewall so that you can run a low pressures to absorb the massive corrugations and the mud pattern to give traction to get you out of the creeks and down really boggy sidetracks
    • Excellent shocks with poly bushes - NOT rubber! Poly lasts, rubber gets destroyed by the mud and corrugations, we were changing out rubber shock bushes while up there.
    • Snorkel - there are deep water crossings. I went up with 4" lift, 35" dia tyres and one of the first crossings had water over the bonnet and onto the windscreen. The vehicle before us got water in the engine and continuted and another drowned and was towed out.
    • Tyre pump and pressure gauge, just becauase tyres.
    • Cargo barrier - because its safe.


    I would also fit an electric winch and was also very grateful for my long range fuel tank.

    When do you have the trip planned for
    Timing makes a difference!
    What style trip are you looking to do - just blasting up to the pointy bit or exploring the best bits around and about the place.
