Sounds like its exhausting the air out but i thought that was done at the valve block which on a D3 is on the RH side behind the bumper so not sure how it would leak out of the strut without affecting the raising as well.
Hi all,
We have an early sport that the front left strut leaks on,
When I say leaks, we can hear a hiss at the top, but ONLY when it is letting the car down, it NEVER leaks down even if parked for a fortnight.
I have never had one out, so a little confused as too how it could only leak when lowering, as it appears to only have one line in, is this correct?
I'd it had two lines, one feed line and one dump line, this would explain it much better.

when the bag rolls to the weak spot as it's lowering , air can escape through there , as the bag does a 180 degree on itself
If it doesn't go down when left for two weeks, you have nothing to worry about.

Maybe its pushing out air trapped between the outside of the bag and the body of the strut, as you lower the suspension.
This would explain the hiss, yet no loss of of suspension over time
Thanks for the ideas guys...but just to repeat...
It never hisses air out on the way up in any mode, only when you press the lower button, and it's right at the top of the left front strut....so that's when going from off-road height to normal, and from normal to access.
It doesn't leak down at all when parked, the issue is that I *think* it's causing a fault in the suspension ecu, and I haven't had time to check it out further, but I believe it's because the exhausted air is not making it's way back through the system, does that sound right to anyone? Or have I got the wrong car in mind....I play with far too many different ones to remember what's what!

There is only one line which operates as in/out and the air exhausts via the compressor i believe so it doesn't make sense that it makes a noise without affecting both raising and lowering.

The aerodynamics inside the system are not the same for the air going one way, then the other.
Just one tiny lip or similar inside a join could generate a noise with air going one way but not the other.
Think of a real whistle (as an extreme example)............. blow air in the normal outlet and its silent, blow air in the normal inlet and it can hurt your ears.
