Nothing should be awake if you don’t keep opening and closing the vehicle.
Loading the car today - had the full tailgate door open for about 2 hours. When I went to start to car it failed to start as the battery while not flat would not turn the engine over - 15mins on a 12 amp charger and all started.
So - with the tailgate door open - what stays on - certainly enough to take about 50ah out of a 95ah battery in just 2 hours. The interior lights only stay on for about 10 mins so not them.

Thats what I would have thought but the battery drained in the two hours - and I know the battery was OK because it started cold first up in the morning when i backed out the garage - parked and opened the tailgate. On trying to start where was enough power to light up the dash but only make the starter click.
Did highlight I need bigger jumper leads and maybe one of those small battery starter packs because nothing had the power to start the car except putting the battery on the smart charger for 15mins to get enough charge to fire.

So my first thought would normally be that the battery is on its way out, if you started it and only had it running briefly it might have been enough to flatten it.
HOWEVER we have a d3, and I've had exactly the same experience several times, 4 months ago for instance, I was fitting a rear drawer, car had been driven a few km, I stopped it and started fitting, boot open at all times, 2-3 hrs later and it's flat as... charge it up and it's been fine since.
This has happened a number of times,I may have had the radio as well,can't remember for sure.
I think I even changed the battery once as I thought it was kaput, but the New one does the same.
Good to remember though that I have a fridge and dual batteries, and the starting battery may have already been quite down at the start of all this.

Thanks James - your scenario is definitely similar to mine - only time I have ever had a previous issue with this battery was when I left the internal lights and the cubby fridge on overnight and had to call the NRMA.
There is obviously something going on but not sure, I guess I just dont leave the tailgate open.
One thing though, my current jumper leads are not good enough and will have to fix that.

I have read that the ECU periodically wakes up to test the state of everything if a door is left open, but is that correct?
Luckily you were not out somewhere in the middle of nowhere camping.
An Amp meter on the battery will soon show how much current is being drawn.
The vehicles usually only wake up for a timed period if a door is opened.
I have had the tailgate for the D4 open all day,and it hasn't drained the battery.
I leave a side door open,just on first catch, when sleeping in the RTT,to stop the vehicle continually relevelling,and eventually ending up on the bump stops,but it has always started with out an issue.I always make sure the internal lights are off.
If locked up the vehicle will relevel every six hours or so,and doing this hardly uses any power.
More than likely your battery was low before the tailgate was left open,or it is on its way out.
Yours is a RRS,but it would work similar i would think.

The logic of the waking up each time a door is opened or closed or waking up every six hours is really a bit of nonsense from a design point of view. Really what the software designers thinking?
My 101 does not wake up and it does not have any issues.
Really if the D3/RRS did not wake up what impact would it have on the operation of the vehicle. I currently do not have the muffler connected to the air compressor so here it whenever it vents - it vents when you open a door (wake up time), when parked it vents occassionally (wake up time) - also as soon as battery level started to pick up when on the charger the air compressor vented.
Thanks for the input - I guess I just need to keep a door open when doing work around the car. Re the comment about having the issue when offroad - spot on. I carry jumper leads but these are not big enough - I did have good batteries to jump off but they would not start the car. So I also want to get a good Lithium starter pack.
