Question RRS TDV8 Oil change Castrol Edge C3/ Magnatec A5

    Hi,

I just did a first maintenance on my RRS TDV8. (265000km, Stage 2, Particle filter removed, 350 HP, bought at 255000)

I had a problem, I found out I didn't have enough Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 oil to refill the 9.5L of oil since accidentally bought 4L containers...

There was a rest of Castrol Edge 5W30 C3 though of just 9.5L from my previous car (BMW 320d 2006), and since this was the only one we could use and we couldn't find more Castrol near, the next oil change will most probably be in 10000kms, so we used this.

The C3 should be for vehicles with a particle filter and contain less stuff that can clog this filter. My car had it's filter removed.
The A5 oil had the WSS-M2C913-B qualification mentioned in the manual of the Range Rover, but on the container only WSS-M2C913-C&D was mentioned, I found out on webshops that WSS-M2C913-B also seems to fall under this qualification, I think the C&D are just more recent.

I also find that the C3 oil is for Engines that are designed to be capable of using Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 3.5 mPa*s. And the A5 oil is for Engines designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa*s. Is this a critical factor?

I have been reading about oils for a couple of hours, looking for other opinions and this brought me here. By now I think it cannot be that much of a problem but I'd like to have opinions of more people.

    Kind Regards,

    Jonathan

Lower HTHS oils are generally regarded as fuel economy oils, I wouldnt sweat using a dash of higher HTHS oil.
The C3 oil will have slightly lower SAPS levels, but that is offset with other additives to combat wear and EP loads.

Engines that give the oil a hard time, e.g. Unit injector engines like the TD5 and VW PD engines (and good old flat tappet V8's) need a higher HTHS to combat the lobe and rocker loads of the injectors.
