Range Rover Sport 2013 HSE L320 3.0 Diesel

    Evening everyone,

I'm hoping that someone on here can shed some light on a couple of issues for me it has 60,000 ks on the clock.

We do a bit of towing with this vehicle at about 2900kgs. Im having issues when going up steep gradiants that the engine will go into limp mode and loose power. If i pull of to the side of the road and sit for about 10 mins the car will restart no issue and we continue on. It's a bit of a problem trying to get up hills and the code kicking in with people behind you and is quite dangerous.

I have cleaned the MAFS a couple of times.

Also does anyone have issues when you do a lot of cruising around time without giving it a kick in the guts for a while that the engine can drop batches of smoke like its doing a burn. It doesnt loose power or run rough when this happesns though.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Suggest getting a GAP IID tool this will read error codes that put car into limp mode and give some guidance plus can be used to clear error codes. Re smoke - I'm about to have my car looked at for similar thing we suspect seal in primary turbo which is turbo replacement job. Turbo is about $2900 with about 10 hours labour. Not a body off job. I find my GAP tool real useful.

I have experienced a similar problem twice within two days with my D4 MY13 last summer. In both cases I was turning a slow corner and going uphill at same time and towing my 3.0T c/van. Scared the bejesus out of me as there was no power and the engine wouldn't rev for about 10-15 secs but it felt like an eternity!
At one stage I thought it may have been caused by me allowing the exhaust gas temps to get too high, but came to the conclusion it would not be that as I had been driving it specifically with that in mind and keeping the revs up and TConvertor locked.

During that same c/van trip (here in Tassy) I made particular note to use the paddle shifts more often, and particularly in those instances, and I never had the problem re-cur.

I assume it was because the engine/trans/computer couldn't decide which gear it wanted to be in as I went around the slow corner with the 3.0T load, and something had a "hissy fit".

I have since towed my c/van on numerous occasions at all ambient temps and using the paddle shifts to maintain the revs up around 2600-2900 and the problem has not happened again.

Mine doesn't blow smoke, but there is that update for turbo oil drain pipe which yours may not have had. It was around 2013. An extra oil drain pipe allows the oil to drain back quickly into the sump. Otherwise it builds up in the turbo and creates that massive smoke you mention. The pipe kit is not expensive, nor is the labour to fix I believe. Mine had been done at the factory. (August 13)

Definately have the revised turbo drain pipe installed. Made a lot of difference to my MY13.5

That being said, it was a very useful feature should someone tailgate you at the bottom of a hill. Particularly if they were in a less powerful vehicle
