    thermostat housing tdv8

MY sons 2008 model tdv8 3.6 is leaking coolant. It seems like it is coming from the V somewhere and running down both sides of the bell housing. I have read that it is probably the thermostat housing so I have one coming. The problem I have no idea where to start, looking under the bonnet gives me the hebegees, so is there any step by step instructions available? I have also read it could be the erg coolers. The egrs have been turned off, so can the coolers be bypassed successfully. Any help appreciated.

I was looking at one at my local mechanics where they were doing that job.

It made me glad I don't have a TDV8 - that job looks like a nightmare.

Well, I bought an online manual to guide me doing this job and it only shows thermostat replacement and not the housing, so I thought I would have a go at it anyway. I wish I had never started. I got the plenum off and removed the egrs and the 3 front housing hoses and stopped. To get the rear hoses off meant removing a lot more stuff, so, as I was already way out of my depth I gave up and put it all back together. I was doing this job to get the vehicle ready for sale. It was also leaking badly from the cam cover gaskets, but at the last service the mechanic tightened up the cover bolts and the leak has all but stopped. The upshot of this is it going up for sale cheap, as is. It will be a great buy for someone who knows his way around these vehicles as a lot of money has already been spent fixing all the known faults that pop up around the 200,000 klm mark. I will be listing the vehicle on the market place in the next few days along with photos and a list of the work already done.

sounds like you got pretty close. its frustrating and suprising when LR misses something in their factory workshop manual. there's another brief mention with diagram in the engine section but no actual step/step guide or torque specs...

I've had a coolant leak from the TDV8 V. It was the oil filter\fuel cooler assembly. If you get the thermostat assembly replaced have a good look at this while in there. Just in case. Have also heard of the EGR coolers leaking.

I've done a couple of these now, and while it's a bigger job than the TDV6 one, it is still doable.
If You weren't almost as far away as you can get from here I would probably buy it pending inspection.
Isn't there anyone that can do the job over that way, so you could keep it?

There is no one around here that we know of. It's my sons car and he has been using it for his work and it is not suitable, plus the fact to get any work done on it he drives to near Brisbane, loosing 2 days work because of it. He is going to miss it, but common sense must prevail.
