    Alternator Replacement

    Our vehicle is a 3.0L V6 2010 Range Rover Sport.

    My husband is in QLD driving for work so I am posting this for him.

    Our mechanic has just told us that the alternator has to be replace. He has also said that there is oil all over our engine as it was also just getting replaced (by a different guy) that if we don't get it done ASAP the car might catch on fire.

    Our mechanic doesn't have the time to fit us in before the public holiday on Thursday and we have already paid for camping this weekend.
    Is there anyone else in Canberra area that would be able to fit us in urgently.
    If my husband gets the alternator from our mechanic, is this an easy job and does he need any special tools?
    Is there anyone that might be able to give hime a hand. He comes home tomorrow, Tuesday.

    I don't live anywhere near you, but as no one has replied..

    I've only got experience on the 2.7 motor, they are reasonably easy to do.

    Will need a fan spanner and normal tools, sockets etc.

    Not sure I understand the "oil all over" comment, but I guess it could be degreased, without going silly on electrical connecters.

    With changing the alt, don't try and take shortcuts, they usually end up being long cuts!

    A judicious tap on a large shifter with a hammer will usually loosen the fan nut.

    Is the oil from a split manifold that has since been replaced? Alternatively, the crankshaft oil seal may have popped out in which case the sump will very quickly be out of oil.

    I replaced the alternator on the street in front of house, took most of the day as had to remove the turbo pipes , belts etc and then there is a small wire at the back of alternator that we broke and couldn't get to...
