I couldn't be happier with mine.. glad I found a diesel.. goes like a ripper:D
Will get the auto serviced next chance I get. Was quoted 700 bucks to do. Apparently it has a plastic sump which they change for one which makes the following services cheaper.. does that sound right?

I am quite interested to see what they are going for k's v $$ v Diesel V petrol V year and so if you are game please tell us. I have obviously been looking around in the usual paces to get an idea of what people want but what they get might may differ?
That doesnt sound right, mines got a tin sump and was serviced for $260. the dearest quote was $500 but i got the vibe he didnt want the job. wish someone around here had a megaflush machine. I would shop around mate, thats very expensive considering only half the oil gets changed. please let us know how you go.Quote:

I was at Bruce Davis the other day (test driving their 5.0l P38) and discussing the virtues of both l322 petrol and diesel and their mechanic said they have seen 2 diesels (for fuel pumps) in the last few years and dozens of petrols for various other things. I haven't owned one but from i have heard the diesels are pretty reliable, however i do love the sound of a nice V8!Quote:

Never thought I would be converted. I used to hate diesels! Driving the L322 from Melbourne to Gold Coast was the best drive ive done.. just wanted to keep on going. Averaged 9.8litres per 100 the whole trip:D and the little diesel has more than enough power.. perfect engine for the car.

Plastic tranny sump? - no, just an ordinary steel one.
Anyway check what gets done at the so called "service".
As you can see from the other posts, a service can take various forms/prices.
The ATO fluid must be the correct type - that's mainly why they are sealed for life. :)
I've spent countless hours researching this with lubricant manufacturers and finally with GM. Most lubricant manufacturer service assistance desks don't want to talk to you when you state that you are enquiring about either RangeRover L322 td6 or BMW X5 3.0tdi. Apparently they have a large red caution on their systems that warns them to not provide any ATO fluid advice for those vehicles.:eek:
Many service centres simply use the latest spec synthetic fluid which is a big mistake.:confused:
The proper spec fluid sells for $900 per 20 litre drum at BMW and LandRover dealers however even BMW dealers get the specs wrong and they mix up the petrol tranny fluid with the diesel tranny. ZF v GM.
A proper service will use the best part of 20 litres.
The genuine filter sells locally for $150 or thereabouts.
Therefore the minimum parts cost of a genuine service will be over $1000.
I've done it myself with the proper GM spec fluid which I sourced on special order from Valvoline. I imported the filter/sump gasket kits from a BMW dealer in USA. Even then my parts/fluid cost $325.
Beware as rapid transmission failure occurs following a service utilising the wrong spec fluid. Read some of the horror stories from England where these trucks have now been running around for 10 years with long distances on the odo. Beware of the wrong spec fluid!!! For us with our higher temps and more trailer towing it is even more critical. Confusion reigns as some service centres just look at the tranny and assume that it is the same GM tranny as other GM family vehicles have. Apparently even some model Commodores run the same tranny (drivetrain gears etc) but that is not the issue. The issue is with the aluminium valve body which is different spec alloy and other properties for every vehicle. Apparently BMW source(d) the GM tranny for the L322 td6 from a tranny manufacturer in Strausbourg, France.
Any quote of a service for $200 or $300 is guarenteed :confused: to be using the incorrect fluid so you are far better off keeping the factory sealed for life fluid in your tranny.

I just rang MR Auto in Brissy and they use Valvoline Max Life full synthetic. $400 to change the oil and filter. They said the fluid is alot cheaper than what D3's use??

The correct ATF is Valvoline synthetic ATF #1272 - this ATF is to Dexron VI spec.Quote:

If the fluid is changed by a dealer then ensure that they do a complete change and not just a partial change (only drop the sump). For a complete change the 5 litres out of the sump is changed as well as a complete flush of the tranny and from all the pipes and cooler circuit. This takes a full 20 litres of more to do it properly. 20 litres of #1272 will cost $275 at wholesale. A filter will cost $150 from a dealer. plus labour.
So if you're being quoted anything less than that they are taking short cuts at your expense.
Anyway there is no hurry - looking at the condition of your truck and if it's only done 100k then you have plenty of time to get this right.

Have you made sure that the factory recall/front diff replacement has been done on your truck? This is a far more critical matter than an ATF change.
