It's under the top plastic cover on the engine, held in with in-hex bolts. Buy another from eBay uk, it's far cheaper than anyone over here. They are the same as a td4 freelander.

Did you change the pollen filter too?

If its your first service, it would pay to give the inside bottom of the fuel tank a clean. It's a painful dirty job, but great for piece of mind.

There are 2 large access holes under the carpet, below the rear seat. I got about 200mls of sludgey water out of mine. The inside liner of the tank is white, so it's easy to clean.


I think it may have been the reason the car had a new hp pump when I got it, and injectors were shot.

Nice advice Andrew - I think I will be doing that to mine this week - didn't kow you could access the inside of the tank like that.

the hardest part is getting all the fuel out of the tank without making your car smell like diesel. I used lots of rags and a few buckets, as you dont want to run the tank too empty or you will be sucking the sludge through your engine.

Well, just spent an hour checking out the inside of my fuel tank. Really easy job for those who want to attempt this.

This may not be exactly how it's supposed to be done, but here's what I did:- Remove the spare (to access and remove the spare strap bolts), remove these bolts (8mm Hex), then the seats (4 x 13mm bolts on each one), then the trims inside the door so the carpet will come up. There are 4 bolts that hold the seat brackets at the back, which the carpet runs under, but I split the carpet with a knife so I don't have to remove them. I then pulled the carpet up out the way and held it against the back of the front seats with an occy strap.

You can then access the 2 access panels to the top of the tank. There are 4 x 10mm nuts holding each one on. Once you have the covers off, you can see the top of the tank, and the 2 openings in the tank - the drivers side has the fuel supply and return lines going through it, so I didn't bother pulling that one off. The passenger side is a blank bung, and has a large threaded nut holding the bung in - this unscrews anti clockwise, then the bung pops out. Plenty of room to get your whole arm in there!

So, got a torch out and had a look around inside - absolutely spottless, so I'm pretty happy with that!. It's either been done before (but the layer of dust on the bung suggests not recently, or it's never had a bad batch of diesel through it.

Put it all back together, and I'm one happy chappy. Well worth checking to put your mind at ease. Now it's time for a beer, as it is bloody hot out.
