Every gearbox design will have some sort of problem during it's life. What's wrong with yours? Has anyone looked at it?

I don't know what writing to LR will achieve though, they'll just tell you to go to a dealer.

Hmmmm - there are plenty of threads and posts on this subject already. It is well known on this forum that I am not the biggest fan of these boxes...

There are known issues with these boxes - what exactly is your doing, and how many KM are on it?

Check this thread out - L322 td6 GM transmission oil & filter there are quite a few posts here, but worth wading through.

    Cheers - Gav

Hi Gav is your L322 diesel, my transmission went at 93,000klm having a transmission rebuild, at 22000klm later it has failed again with plenty of metal inside same as before, yes I use sport mode when towing and before the first rebuild had the transmission serviced with new oil and filter, thinking of fitting an extra oil cooler and seek advice on this? other than that love the vehicle to bits have had R/R classic, defenders, county done many miles 4x4 over our great country.

Hi Romar, yes mine is a diesel. Geez, that's bad - even for these boxes. Who did the rebuild - a trannie specialist that had good knowledge of these boxes or just any old transmission place? (No names though...), or was it an off the shelf exchange unit - some of these don't get properly rebult - they just get the busted parts replaced, so they are not a true reco.

I feel for you - they are a great car, but this sort of thing really puts a sour taste in your mouth.

If you don't mind letting on, how much did the first 'reco' box set you back? I blew over $6K getting mine done...

They are very common to go. The one in our l322 diesel went. Put in a brand new one, with new torque converter and new oil cooler. If u dont do a new oil cooler or converter you will be back around doing it again.

They go in the petrol aswell, just at high km's.

The torque of the td6 is what does it. That and lack of servicing, i dont believe they are a 'sealed for life' box unlike the bmw sticker says.

Even the newer 6spds are all having problems now.

    Roger
See if you get a late spec torque converter, LR changed the specs after 2003 , but didn't tell anyone ( they knew the box was having trouble), people just noticed a different part number and the penny dropped !!!

If it only lasted 22KKM do you want the same person doing it again? For $3800 I'm not sure if you got a full rebuid - i have an itemised list from mine, and the parts alone were over $3K, plus labour, plus fitting, plus trannie fluid - came to $5,800 all told - the parts list was over a page long, so there is a lot to be replaced in them if done properly. I did have some uprated parts installed in mine though, this may have bumped up the price a bit...

Did they rebuild the torque converter during the rebuild? This is a crital step, as - previously mentioned - is the oil cooler and lines. I had a new cooler fitted and the lines were blown through with solvent then air - I would have replaced these as well, but there were none available at the time.

Hope you get a better result this time around.

    Cheers - Gav

    Hey Guys,
There is alot of GM trannys blowing up in this thread. Did anyone exprience the tranny staying in 3rd gear when getting hot whilst towing etc etc?

In my ZF it has locked in 3rd a few times when hot and then released approx 5 minutes later which is a safety feature before overheating the fluid. Wonder if the GM box has the same feature.

By the way I'm in the process of installing a second cooler on mine which I will post photo's on other thread?

Do you think changing the tranny fluid every 20k and filter at 40K is to much of a overkill? (especially when towing alot)
I worked out it cost me $75 for filter kit and oil is $60 approx for 6 litres.

Maybe keeping the fluid cool and clean is the secret!

    Cheers Paul
