    dont temt fate

    Bought a generator off gumtree and went to a town about 85 kays away to pick it up.On way home called into lr specialist who has just replaced head gasket on my td5 defender to pick up some roll bar bushes.Less than ten kays later cruising along with consumtion showing 9.2 ltrs per 100k and thinking geez this thing drives nice when DING ,FUEL INJECTION, and rolled to a stop.After a nice ride on a tilt tray back to lr specialist seems secondary fuel pump has called in sick.Its still down in workshop waiting for a new pump.This came the day after spending a few hours making and fitting new solenoid contacts in my defender 130.Oh well its only time and money!

    Secondary? Is that the one inline beside the fuel tank?

    Yes,accessed by removing plate under fuel tank

    yeah, OK. Several of us have done had that one recently, mine wouldn't start at home one morning, so in a way I was lucky - not stranded away from home and could leave it in the garage until a new one came from OS - $92 delivered, took about 30 min to change, most of that was spent lifting the car so I could get under it.

    They told me $440 for secondary and in tank pump over$600!

    That is correct - trade price at the dealer. Mate had his fail 2 weeks after mine and he was away, needed at fixed straight away - he paid 440 + Diagnostics & fitting.

    Those of us that got them for $92 had to wait 1-2 weeks for it to arrive.

    I heard a rumor that this pump is now on the 100k service at the dealers. I know toyota change an elec pump in the tank at 100 in the Prado.

    As Harlie said. Inline pump ~ $100 & I just got an in tank pump + a set of filters ( fuel / oil ) for $460 delivered

    Workshop rang this afternoon,not secondary pump but main pump.Surprise surprise!$1100 plus ,on top of the $2700 for the defender head gasket.Now the solenoid contacts on the disco are playing up.Can someone please explain to me again why i like land rovers?

    Can you give me a bit more info on this secondary inline fuel pump?

    I've got a 130 TD5 Defender from 2001, and all I knew was it has a fuel pump in the fuel tank, and a "Fuel pressure Regulator" (?) on the back of the head. I've replaced the reg on the back of the head as it was dripping, but I didn't think this did any pumping.

    So, is this secondary pump in between the fuel tank and the fuel pressure regulator? Are there 2 pumps inside the fuel tank?

    Cancel all of that - I read the Defender 130 bit in the first post..... Completely the wrong forum

    Hey Harlie,

    Suffering the same issue w/ my wagon at the moment and have decided to change the in-line fuel pump, which seems like the most likely issue. Stealers quoted me $590 for the part + $380 for labour! So, I think I'll be doing this one myself...

    Do you have any advice on changing the pump? I've read one thread which discussed hassles replacing the clips, did you find this? Finally, any brand you'd recommend for the part?
