TD6 reliability gear box

Well, finally have the L322 registered and on the road with my 5L50E (ex Caddy petrol v8) upgrade and the Caddy V8 TC.
No faults registered.
All working well although the gear changes feel a bit more abrupt than original 5L40E, but I think this due to "V8 valving" in the valve block, plus the extra TD6 flywheel mass. Its all only 200km old so will see how it goes after a few thousand K's.
The TC definitely feels stronger in acceleration; yes, lower stall at around 2,5-600rpm
Now have to fix EAS, that has decided to go blinky.

This is very off-putting...

Almost makes the L322 less reliable than the P38... at least the known major issues with the P38 wouldn't leave you stranded

Yeah its one of life conundrums.
Great car let down by inferior mechanicals(GM Box and Transfer case).
As I near retirement age I'm wondering if its worth buying one or not.Cant afford a later model(2006-2009). Dont really want a disco TD5 or a D3.

I think the L322 the pick of all the RR's. It is a truly fine looking car:cool:

Someone somewhere must be able to rebuild these gearboxes successfully.

Maybe import one from Ashcrofts?

But does anyone know if the sonnax kit for sleeving the valve body puts a sleeve in the valve for locking the torque converter? Knowing my luck it doesn't and that's my issue......

I've read on one of the bimmer forums about a company in Germany that uses a different ecu so that the converter locks up a lot earlier.
You only swap the ecu and thats it.

IIRC that is true, and that is why I ended up with a new valve body, upgraded materials etc apparently.

You still need healthy internals or the pressures will be too low.

ALL of the 5L40E issues are caused by low pressures; caused by excessive clutch clearances and material blocking the filter, causing low pressures, causing more wear and slipping, destroying the lockup clutch, more material in the filter, causing more slipping and heat and wear on the valve body bores etc etc

They just head down a path of destruction slowly from when new.

Yep, agree with JC 100%. The 5L40E is garbage and nothing will fix it long term. When mine next dies, I'll go the 5L50E install as Donrover has done. Tis should keep it going for much longer and allow a power upgrade on the engine without destroying the box.

Hopefully that is a couple of years away at least, coz I can't afford it at the moment....
