wheel size options

Well ... I have the rims .... but wheel nuts are after market and so the hunt for wheel nuts begins :( so still stuck on my 22's for the min :(
On a brighter note I did buy both sets of wheels from Roamer in the for sale section ... it took a five hour round trip for the wheels I wanted so I figured hey why not buy his muds too !!
Now have
4 x 22 inch roads (aftermarket ones copies of a range rover rim)
4 x 19 inch roads (ones I wanted 15 spokes)
5 x 19 inch mud wheels and tyres (early rrs rims and a further 2 muds ... so yes 7 mud tyres LOL )
last but not least I also have the 1 x 18 inch spare wheel (original spare wheel mag with new tyre )
I have a bloody tyre shop worth of tyres and rims here !! I only wanted the one set lol
Thinks I'm going to be busy on ebay soon. cant post pics yet as need the wheel nuts but will sort it as soon as get nuts :)

4 x 18" split 5 spoke rims No tyres

+ 2 spare sets of early nuts including lock nuts

Just waiting to get some money together to buy some semi offroad tyres

Soooo.... A few questions for the great brains trust out there...:D

Just got back back from the Melrose trip, in which we did about 500km of dirt/off road driving - on the 20's...:eek:

Made it back in one piece, no punctures or dramas. BUT we now have a taste for this sort of thing and the sort of places we ended up, so I now have the go ahead to turn the L322 from a pretender to a contender...

I will start a new thread on all the plans, but this thread suits my need to know about rims and tyres...

The 20's will be going, and a set of 18's to go on, with some decent all terrain tyres needed. (If anyone has a set of rims for sale I am now seriously looking) and the 20's will be on the market for those wanting a bit more bling.

Anyway, I am after 2 things here - opinions on good all terrains that people have run or are running, and secondly, has anyone thought of putting on some slowly larger diameter tyres? Only interested in clearance thoughts here, not all the other negatives some may think of. Yes I know bigger tyres will reduce the power of the car, yes I know bigger tyres will put extra stress on the driveline, yes I know bigger tyres won't fit in the spare wheel well...

I am after opinions on what the extra sidewall size would do and any clearance issues anyone thinks I may encounter.

I'll post details on the other ideas I have in a new thread. Maybe we can take the wheel and tyre discussion there as well if needed.

Gav, I know who asked for no negatives, and legislation talk is generally frowned upon here, but - bigger tyres are illegal, over 15mm. Agree with it or not.

My Brother in-law works for one of the major insurers, his job is to find a way to deny an insurance claim. He says 4WDs with either oversize tyres or ridiculous lift are the easiest for them, and they never loose in court. If it goes wrong...

I'm running 265/60, to my knowledge they are the largest with in the legal limit.

Thought it was 25mm here in Vic, but I could be wrong. That is still an inch bigger. Gives a bit more sidewall on the tyre. I'll make enquiries on the legalities down here. My classic has 31's on it and is considered legal - I have had it checked and my insurance knows about them and has no issues with them.

Section 13.3 covers tyres, and two options are given which are mutually exclusive. Option one allows for tyres up to 50mm bigger than standard if the other conditions are met - that is no more than 75mm lift total for suspension and tyres, not rubbing, not sticking out, etc.

Just checked some posts on other forums and it is agreed that 50mm larger is now acceptable in Vic.

Based on those regs, I could stick a 25mm spacer above the airsprings and still put 50mm bigger tyres on it.

I would still be checking with Vicroads & my insurance company, but it looks doable down here.

ANOTHER EDIT - Just called the Engineer who will be certifying my Series III and asked him about tyre sizes. With Engineering Certification you can go quite large indeed - a set of 33's on the L322 would be no dramas if it passed the swerve testing requirements for that vehicle. Would be a bit pricey though. Another $1,500 to $2,000 on top of the rim & tyre combo, with no guarantee it would pass the testing, but he thinks it would.

I personally recommend MTs over ATs. On a Patrol you would be deaf within a week, but on a RR with $120k of body insulation you will be happy. In my opinion, if you want to make it a contender - tyres are the first thing to do.

But of course it depends on the percentage on road and off road. I have Goodyear Wrangler Duratrak mudders on my P38 (32"s instead of stock 29"s) and they are capable, quiet, good in the wet (surprisingly) and lasting well on the road. Traction control is very capable, but is improved considerably by grabbier tyres.

The Evogue runs a 18 inch rim that looks good, similar to the Autobiography rims.
Does anyone know how wide the rim is and it's offset ?

The LR site doesn't have any details on wheel or rim size.

Well Andy's customer service is great ! I received the following e-mail a few hours after I sent my request for delivery costs.

This would place a large variety of the rims delivered here for $250 - $300 per rim; which is around what basic second hand rims are costing from e-bay, tyre places etc . It's the different styles available that is the attraction.
