Heavy Duty Torque Converter for Td6

I spoke to this company early last year about doing a H/D converter for the Td6. They now have one available !

I don't know the price, as I just found the announcement of it's release by accident.

I was talking to Reece(furious performance) about it yesterday and he was not that interested in it.He said as long as you do regular fluid changes on the box, there's not much to go wrong.
But I'll talk to the guys that built it and see what they say.

My TC is starting to make grinding noises already(only had the car 2 weeks ) so I've already booked mine in later this month.
No I won't be driving it in the mean time…

    cheers

There is a history of bad T/C clutch linings with the French 5L40E. Nearly all the L322 and BMW box failures show signs of early deteriation of the clutch linings; mixing in the oil and contaminating the valves and the rest of the box. As stated elsewhere GM released a modified auto in late 04 with a updated T/C ( different part numbers ) , the late build 04/05 HSE and the 05-06 Td6 Vogues have had little problems reported.
If you change the T/C and everything else looks ok, I would highly recommend the replacement of the pressure regulator solenoid with the Borg Warner unit.

I spoke to him in depth last year. I was left with the impression that many of the cars he sees (holden/bmw/volvo) with the 5L40e that have been serviced are going trouble free on the original box. But the point he stressed is regular fluid changes from new - this is the problem. IF it hasn't been changed from day one then careful inspection of fluid and pan each time is required to assess what is wearing (and hopefully what isn't). Run it for 200k+ with debris in the fluid and it is going to give problems no matter what you do about servicing - it's already gone when the first change is done.

One of the issues is weight. Correct me if I'm wrong but the RR is the heaviest vehicle this box was fitted to. And pre the 04 upgrade it is well documented that the linings (as Laurie talks about) and plates are not up to it and end up worn to bare metal - or peel off in chunks (because of crap bonding). The debris is then pumping through the box. This is also accelerated by drop in pressure once the valve block or regulator wear (due to debris in the fluid)

In my case I've been lucky, combination of the upgraded box, first owner that drove slower than grandma in a country area, and it has been regularly changed (20k) since 100k - the fluid comes out clean with nothing in the pan. However, I’m interested in a low stall converter and would entertain it for a driveability point.

If you have a healthy box, is it worth looking at TC, valve body and regulator as a preventitve, piece of mind measure. When I asked Reece this he said no, don't bother, keep changing fluid. Not sure about the regulator, but the TC and valve body are straight forward jobs.

    Reply to my enquiry:
"The price for a Full Billet Heavy Duty 5L40E to suit the Range Rover is
$1200.00 inclusive of GST as an outright purchase. However, if we receive
your old change over unit and we find it to be reusable, we will deduct $
150.00 off the price, ie. $1050.00 inclusive of GST.
We recommend the original OEM fluid to use in these units.

Please give us a call on 03 9466 1563 if you have any further questions."

    Doesn't include fitting.

    Very interested in this.

Mine had a full reco put in at 170K, and I had the fluid changed at 195K, and the TC started shuddering on light lockup at 245K. I replaced it with another TC out of a low K wreck (not impressed with that) as no one wanted to reco the TC on its own. its starting to give me a bit of a concerning lockup now at 265K.

Would love an uprated one. In my view they just aren't that big and the electrics for the box is designed to cycle them way to much between lockup or not in 2nd third and fourth for 50k's upwards in speed.

The shop which did the reco on my box originally says the turbo is failing and that's the cause of the hunting between lockup or not. Turbo has been checked and I am assured its fine for its age.

Except for the T/C in your car, I'd bet Don's hybrid 5L40/50E auto that he has done, would be the same as later autos like yours !!! Would love to compare all 3 boxes side by side.
Easy factory upgrade as no changes to the electronics or installation, and most of all NO ADMITTANCE that the original box was under rated, and hence no recalls or warranty
