Thanks - lots of info but I gave-up before finding the answer so might try to arrange a test although only limited tyre options for 19" anyway. If we get to upgrade vehicles then I'd see how 20s go first.

The 19" rims from my 3.0 D4 do fit the 4.4 TDV8. I didn't buy a cheap set on ebay a few days ago because I didn't know at that time that they would fit and I didn't know that the oversize 20" tyres that I was considering would not fit in the boot alongside my fridge, only discovering that today.

They are the original rims from my MY10 3.0 in this picture. At this stage they're only fitted to see to what extent the harshness of the original 20" tyres is reduced when using 255/55R19 fitted with Hankook RF10 with their slightly taller sidewalls. If not sufficient then I expect to fit Nitto G2s in 275/55R20 that will have more sidewall height again.

I know we have discussed it in the past but the 275/55R20 on my car are sublime as far as taking the sharp edges from the air suspension. My wife thinks I am crazy as the car rode like a Bentley with the 255/50R20 as standard, but it is just like a balloon now, no concept of harshness at all. Now, as a tyre guy, (see number plate), this result is about tyre choice. If I had gone for a LT spect tyre with a firmer side wall, I would not have got the ride benefits I now have. I don't tow a huge caravan like Chris does, I sometimes tow a small trailer but most of my driving is long haul, reasonably quick stuff over country roads or dirt roads in mining areas. I have rarely suffered punctures in this environment and so grip and comfort over long distance are my priorities. The 275/55R20 size is the perfect combination for me. I hate that I cannot get a spare in my wheel well in the boot but I figure I can limp the car on the smaller standard spare if necessary and also let some pressure out of the other three tyres to assist with the gearing difference. I would be interested in 19's if it meant I could run the higher sidewall, better traction tyres and still get a spare in the wheel well in the boot..........interesting conundrum.

Your comments about the ride on your 275/55s are very appreciated.

It was only a short run to the village and back this morning on mostly a now sloppy driveway and gravel lane but the ride improvements are promising. The Hankooks were superb in the slush, without any sound of TC activation even uphill. The RRV steers beautifully on the muddy lane whereas the D4 always wanted to pull left or right through the mud, even with these same wheels and tyres.

I'll still go to the Nittos if I think the ride on bitumen needs to be improved with the hope that I'll be able to squeeze the large spare in the boot somehow. I suspect that the fridge set at slight angle would provide just enough space. The fridge would have to be removed to extract the tyre but that's required to get to the jack and for the standard spare anyway. The Nittos are preferred for their more open tread than the ATRs for slush but not LT with possible harsher ride, probable worse noise and fuel consumption.

Edit: Good point about the std size spare. It gets used very infrequently and for relatively short distances. Faults generated by ABS from different wheel speeds whilst the steering is straight that cause the suspension to lower can be overcome by removing the 20A fuse 5 in the rear panel and probably the 5A suspension fuse too to avoid constant messages. However a full size spare would be necessary for an off-road trip for which a roof-rack might be fitted for other reasons anyway. Almost a case for 6 rims so that the large spare gets worn along with the other 4, which also caters for the possible short-term unavailability of the particular tyre.

Have you looked at 275/55/19s ? They are about half way between standard size and 275/55/20s. 275/55/20s must be huge as 285/60/18s looks big compared to 255/55/19s.

Unfortunately the 275/55/19s are less common than standard 19s and have an ordinary load rating.
