3.6 TDV8 water in fuel warning

I referred to the manual and it said take to dealer.
But after a little research the fix is replacing the fuel filter.

No problem had one on hand. Same part no. But I had to swap the plastic screw in at the bottom as they were different and the new one did not have the pin for the sensor.

Poured the contents of the filter into a glass and the film of water can be seen

That's strange, the water should be on the bottom, that's why the sensor is on the bottom of the filter because fuel is lighter and should sit on top.

Have you ever changed the filter? I'd expect some water in my L322 going on my experience with a Lucas separator on my 110. I'd empty that every 18mths at least. The L322 has fuel cooling, so maybe that reduces condensation accumulation in the tank and so less water in the fuel. I don't know.

I haven't been game to touch much under the bonnet yet.

You should be able to drain the filter whilst its still on the car and check if its got water in it the same way as you have, using a glass jar.

My D2 had a similar issue , the light would come on and every time I drained the filter no water was evident. All I could think was just a small droplet of water was sitting on the senser and it was enough to trip the light. So you get an idea, put a bit of diesel in the glass and put some water in it , you will soon see what it does.

The upside is at least no water seems to be evident and the pump and injectors will be very happy about that.

Replaced the filter and the water in fuel message came on. Turn off back on and message has now gone for over a week.

Poured some water into the glass and yes goes to the bottom. What was interesting was with the water the dirt caught by the filter could clearly be seen.
