Seems you might be comparing a Vogue with a Sport?
Like comparing a Falcon with Fairlane?
Hi team
I realise this has probably been done to death already but thought I'd ask anywaywith specifics to my data.
Hopefully, sometime in the not too distant future I may have the opportunity to buy either;
A/ A 2009 TDV8 RR Sport ,owned by a reputable but smaller Landrover mechanical business here in Melbourne which I think has mainly only had on road use
or
B/ A 2010 ( update?) TDV6 RR Sport owned by friends of mine. This vehicle has done the Gibb River road and few other outback tracks but no real hard 4WD work
As far as I can guess , they will both have done around 150,000 - 170,000 kms and both will have a full service
It will be a long term vehicle for us and should be with us for at least the next 17 years . Use will be for towing a van around Australia and some light 4WD work.
Very open question I know and its like Ford V Holden but did I hear that thye TDV8 model transmission was prone to failure
Pete

The RRS had the tdv8 up to 2009 I think.
The 2010 will have the updated exterior and interior. That is a big plus. The 3.0 is a nice motor. However, I like the tdv8 in my Vogue. It's very smooth.

RAR110 is right
IIRC the TDV8 in the RRS is 230KW whereas only 190KW in the L322 - even more than my 4.4's 220KW!
Edit: I'll have to find the exact specs..
Topix shows my 4.4 is 260 PS which is approx 194 Kw whilst MY11 L322 brochure has 4.4 at 230 Kw (313 PS)
MY13 L405 brochure has 4.4 at 250 Kw.
Currently can only find 3.6 at 200 Kw for both RR & RRS.

I thought the 3.6TDV8 was 200kw and 640nm in all RR variants .....and 4.4 TDV8 is 230kw and 700nm until 2014 then 250kw and 750nm.

Back to your question.
I've read some opinions that the tdv8 in the RRS has less air flow than the RRV which resulted in excessive heat build up in the RRS, and so failure. It is a fairly warm engine. However it seems to have a good cooling system.
I've read about a few catastrophic failures but not many. There is never a clear explanation. Some have blamed the EGR. The EGR could be part of the problem. Harley on this forum theorised the problem could be related to the EGR allowing in soot which then combines with oil vapour from the crank case ventilation system to form a goo that goes through the turbo, intercooler and manifold, and gums up various sensors. A possible solution is to either disable the EGR to stop soot entering or better filtering for CC ventilation eg a Provent. I'm currently getting a induction treatment to help clean the system.
The tdv8 doesn't have timing belts like the v6.
The tdv6s main problem seems to be the occasional intake manifold failure, which can seem to result in engine failure.
Both engines are from the same "Lion" family, and seen very reliable.

Remove both the TDV8's sump drain plugs when changing oil. The rear plug drains a catchment reservoir for the turbos which is often neglected and eventually blocks the turbo drain pipes causing oil to enter the intake side and also restricts lubrication of the turbo bearings leading to premature turbo failures.
