I believe (happy to be corrected) the valve bores are slightly different tolerances (bigger bores) to allow for smoother shifting with the range rover box, which also helps in its shortening its lifespan. The trans specialist referred to it as "built in slop to smoothen operation".
I have driven an early L322 with a commodore valve block in it and it was noticeably harsher changing gear than the other few td6's I have driven. Might have just been a symptom of the Franken trans it had.
That being said the late 06 box I put in my 02 is a bit harsh as well.
