Thanks all.
Both turbos and the intercooler will be changed. The car is now at MR Automotive and is suggested that they will disconnect an try to run the engine.
As suggested it just went pop with no warning and I thought it was an intercooler hose as I have done a few of them over the years, but this time the difference was that the engine stopped. It did turn over but wouldn't fire.
Wait and see.
Chris.
Turbos should be a service item but judging when to replace them when they're difficult to access and receive grossly differing lives on different vehicles means that they rarely are replaced. However ensuring that during oil changes on both the 3.6 and 4.4 that the drain plug for the turbo return reservoir is removed is likely to help, as accumulated sludge will restrict oil flow from the turbo drains.

TdV8 catostrophic turbo failure !
Notice the carbon deposits on the end of the turbine blades due to centrifugal force in the compressor housing. The heavier oily deposits flung to the ends of the blades and also onto the inner housing. If these deposits continue to grow the oil becomes contaminated and acts as an abrasive inside the turbo damaging bearings etc This starts vibrations at the shaft area that ultimately get bigger and the distance between the blade tips and the housing shrinks till ultimately they touch and then the results are as below. This is why only the highest grade synthetic oils are recommended for turbos so as to reduce carbon build up. The cleaner the air going into the turbo the longer the oil and hence the turbo will last. This is the reason EGR mods and oil catch cans are becoming increasingly popular with diesel owners.

Does that turbo have roller bearings or does the shaft float on oil in bronze bearings? I don't know what type of bearing the 3.6 turbos have but the TD5 turbo has an oil bearing which relies heavily on the seals which when worn allow some oil to escape thereby giving an early warning of failure. The seals on roller bearing shafts can hold oil even when the bearings are quite worn so there's no early warning. Turbo shafts on tractors and trucks are meant to be regularly checked for play, being every 1000 hours for one of my tractors.

Thanks Laurie. You might have finally solved the turbo failure mystery. So is the build up on both sides of the blades do you think? I'm assuming not looking at this pic. And is it worth removing the output pipe and cleaning off the build up on the blades? I'm thinking a turbo refresh at 265,000 km maybe a better option than $4k on new turbos. Plus labour.

From what I now understand one of the possible issues and catastrophic failure is the turbo rotor ovespeeding due to possibly a busted or split intercooler pipe to the engine. Good oIl quality is imperative this goes without saying.
The intercooler and turbo system is common to the outlet of the intercooler hence one of the early warning signs
could well be a sooty exhaust tailpipe. Just going through this and not finding a split intercooler hose at this point has me stumped, I'm still looking.
I'm getting the ECM remapped to take the EGRs out of the equation.
Cheers Marty
Thanks Pete, but it's just my view after reading a lot of articles etc The biggest eye opener was to read the effects of EGR's on engines in the transport industry; I used to drive heavy vehicles and semi's many moons ago, and regular low mileage turbo replacements was unheard of, then came emission controls. When EGR's became mandatory for emission regulations, the effects on turbos etc; created many problems for all engine manufacturers. A quick Google search will bring up many major cases of trouble for engine manufacturers. As emission regulations have got tighter the problems have increased, DPF's and Ad-blue fuel additives are almost mandatory in the Europe and the USA for heavy vehicles. This again has caused problems as construction, cement and local delivery trucks usually don't get a good road run and suffer for it, don't forget you need the high exhaust temps in most setups to make the DPF work !!!
Graeme might be able to shed some light on the emission effects with farming machinery and if he has noticed any major differences with modern tractor type diesel engines in regards to longevity.
As for the carbon deposits on the blades I suspect you might get a little on the rear of the blades due to flow, but by the same reasoning any product like Revive should also be taken across these areas and hence clean them also. Are you considering a core/cartridge replacement for your turbos ? I see already balanced units for sale to suit; below are a few from E-bay.

They list L322 &Sport 3.6 TdV8's as different numbers as I thought they were the same. Whatever you decide to do I would read and/or post on Ffrr to see if any members in the UK have used these suppliers and would they recommend them or some other supplier.
