    Retro-fitting Bluetooth into 2002-2004 L322

The last remaining 2G (GSM) network (Vodafone) will be closing on 30th September so my L322's in-car phone will no longer work.

Therefore I need to get Bluetooth installed. I bought a secondhand BMW ULF mit SES (i.e., with voice recognition) to replace the Siemens in-car phone system. I thought I'd document what I'm doing. The conversion has been covered on the FullFatRR forum but it's all over the place.

It isn't a straight plug and play. Whilst the plugs are the same, the pinouts are different and damage may ensue if the cable is plugged into the ULF. The pinout changes have been documented on FullFatRR and are shown below:

I'll add to this post as I take more pics.

The L322 was fitted with a Siemens BT 2G handset which connected to the electronics in the rear.

Below is the original Siemens unit beside the BMW ULF.

    Phone vs ULF.jpg

The Siemens has two connectors on the bottom cf. the ULF's single. The F-type connector is for the GSM antenna which is up in the rear spoiler. The other connector goes to the small antenna in the car which connects to the handset. This antenna will be replaced by a very similar Bluetooth antenna (see later).

    Phone vs ULF Antenna Sockets.jpg

Note the difference in size. The new ULF mounting tabs don't match up to the Siemens' mounts. However, there is a smaller (4mm) threaded hole just forward of the rear-most mounting tablocation and that lines up nicely with the ULF's tabs.

    ULF top mounting holes.jpg

To prevent vibration, I will use double-sided foam tape lower down on the ULF to stick it to the mounting panel.

At this stage, I'm not sure if the old Voice Recognition Module can be removed. There is a conflict of opinion on FullFatRR. I've removed it pro-tem (it's mounted under the GPS DVD player).

    Voice Recognition Module.jpg

The next issue is the cable from the ULF to the BT antenna. My cable has a right-angled connector at the bottom end. Unfortunately, when fitted to the ULF, the cable is pointed toward the mounting plate. It can't be rotated. I opened the ULF to check.

    Phone antenna cable right-angle plug.jpg

I had a look to see if it could be reversed to be connected to the BT antenna. No such luck for two reasons. Firstly, the connector is keyed and the angles are such that it can't be connected. Secondly, the keying is different at both ends of the cable.

The original antenna - almost identical to the Bluetooth item..

    Old carphone antenna.jpg

I opened both up to compare them. New top, old bottom.

ULF antenna, old and new (top).jpg

What I ended up doing was to remove part of the keying on the BT antenna and cutting part of the antenna mount away to let the right-angled connector to lay flat.

The 54-pin connector from the loom into the Siemens box will, physically, plug into the ULF but as mentioned above, doing it will release the smoke. It needs to be repinned.

    54-pin connector.jpg

I took up a suggestion from FullFatRR and bought an empty Audi connector shell (p/n 4E0972144, price $30) from my local VW dealer and moved the pins to the new shell. The pins are very easy to release with a jeweller's screwdriver.

You like that? An Audi part from VW for a BMW ULF in a Range Rover? The parts counter guy was bemused.

    new 54-pin plug.jpg

I have several pin change diagrams and they all differ so I need to do bit more checking.

However, I'd have to say that I wouldn't recommend the second connector shell. It's messy and the old and new shells get in each other's way. I'd recommend pulling all the pins no longer to be used and putting heat shrink over the pins. Then relocate the remaining pins into their new positions.

That's about it for the moment for the rear of the car.

The next job was to pull the phone eject box out of the centre console. (pic from Bimmernav.com)

    rover_bt_13.jpg

This was much harder than I expected. Firstly, I drove the pin out of the strut on the top left so the eject box could be removed after unscrewing it.

    L322 Centre Console Strut Pin.jpg

Open that panel and underneath there are four T8 Torx screws holding it together. I had to put the Torx bit holder in the lathe and skim it to fit into the screw recesses. The bit holders were fractionally over 10mm and the recesses are 10mm.

I can't tell you how to remove the actual phone holder from the centre of the box. I'm not quite sure how I coaxed it out but nothing broke. However, removing the spring loaded contact end where the phone resides did require butchery.

Inside the console. The disconnected 18-pin connector is where the phone handset eject box plugs in.

    L322 Centre Console Interior.jpg

The moulding split with the eject box removed.

    L322 Eject Box Split.jpg

One can buy a complete new oddment tray to replace the eject box but they appear to retail for about $230 - for a bit of moulded plastic. I need one from a non-phone equipped HSE. In the meantime I'll probably fibreglass up the hole at the rear end of the tray.

My intent is to use the switch that resides under the phone as the pairing button. I'll need to do a bit of butchery on the electronics board in the eject box. The button will need to be reversed so on is to the left (top).

    L322 Eject Box Switch.jpg

The electronics board with the switch in the middle (I've cut off the ribbon cable). The switch is connected to two of the wires in the plug (brown and brown/green) which appear to go back, via the 18-pin plug, to the old 54-pin plug in the rear. To be checked.

The diagrams on FullFatRR are contradictory so I have to do a bit of investigation.

Hmm, I mentioned above that I had removed the Voice Recognition Module (VRM) because the ULF has it built in.

I couldn't work out why the wiring pinout colours in the diagrams on FullFatRR didn't match my wiring colours. On their diagrams, some of the original wiring goes to the Siemens phone module. On mine it goes via the VRM and the wire colours change.

I'm now not sure if the wiring changes will work so it's back to researching. Maybe the VRM has to be reinstalled just for wiring continuity.

I've shorted the appropriate input wires to the VRM to the output wires and it's looking good so far.

I get Activate Pairing, the Bluetooth Pairing. The unit pairs with the message Pairing Successful but it immediately disconnects then reverts to
    Bluetooth Pairing.

BT Range is woeful at the moment. The iPhone 5 has to be in the rear to see the ULF. I tried a couple of iPhones (4s and 5 but I still have an iPhone 4 and 6 I can try
    ).

I'm going to try my two Samsungs (Android and a flip phone)

    It's working.

The low range was because I'd forgotten to plug the BT antenna cable into the bottom of the ULF.

The other problem was due to me not understanding how the system worked.

Interestingly, my cheap Samsung Galaxy transfers all the phone numbers on the phone to the ULF so I can select from them on the Rangie's screen - not that I would, there are too many of them. The iPhones don't transfer any (on this version of the ULF).

Audio quality isn't as good as the old phone system. Now to read the BMW BT handbook: http://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/alb...wnerManual.pdf

    and this guide:
    http://www.carnationsoftware.com/car...Control-en.pdf

I have a few spare wires left over in the voice recognition module plug. Luckily, three four of these are exactly what I need to connect into the iBus to run Navcoder NavCoder Website

I bought a Rolf Resler USB-iBus interface IBUS Interface for BMW cars so I'll connect it and go and have a play.

Hmm, the poor quality may have been due to a flat battery! Did the ULF drain the battery overnight?

Navcoder works well. When I went to wire in the Rolf Resler iBus interface, I found that of the remaining 5 wires left in the Voice Recognition Module plug, 4 were required for the interface.

Now, what will I do with the left over wire?

This weekend I'll try to summarise the wiring information. The basic info on FullFatRR suits the L322 without in-built voice recognition.
