This is the filter/valve assembly attached to the top of the rocker cover, RHR of engine.
I see that the filter (LLJ500010) is available along with gaskets, or you can get the whole assembly (8510298), that includes the filter, gaskets and filter valve assembly. There appears to be recommendations to change the filter at each engine oil change (10000km). Should the valve assembly be changed periodically?

As Justin said.
Ff you are going to keep the existing filtration system then just buy the filter and gasket, if you want to get rid of the old filtration system and upgrade to newer system, just buy the updated vortex BMW housing , as it does not use a filter element.
I'm assuming the later engines have a slightly different design around the breather.
I "upgraded" to the newer vortex system about 4-5yrs ago. Been trying to work out why the car had an oily exhaust smell that's been around for I suppose about 4-5 yrs - must be getting slow as I didn't join the dots.
Recently removed the vortex insert and fitted a new filter element and what do you know - smells all gone. Zero oil now in the air system.
While I had it all apart, the inlet manifold got a clean, both intercooler hoses were coated in oil (internally) and I flushed the intercooler - alarming how much oil came out of it!!!!! AND surprisingly easy to do... So what I proved is while the vortex insert will not need to be looked at again, it creates other issues. The original CCV filter was clogged at 175km, so I figure that changing it during a major service (approx 60k) will be a safe option. (the Provent catch can specifies filter change at 80km)
Filter with gasket is £4.99 - just add it to order when I am after parts from UK, always have a supply of all the filters, going to treat this one like the others.
Ironically I was doing this work as part of investigating a turbo boost problem so this was a bonus to sort out.....

Interesting that you found an oily smell. The filters are cheap and I replaced mine when I did my first service, but under advice on forums I fitted the updated version. The previous owner had the turbo replaced so I took this as a precaution. I don't have a smelly exhaust like you had though.
You say the intercooler clean is an easy job, I was under the assumption that the Front bumper to had to be removed?
Cheers, Mario
Didn't remove it...
