    L322 td6 turbo noise

Hi all my 2003 td6 has decided to talk to me in a different way in the mornings. She likes to whine as i throttle her .i suspect the turbo is about to fail. Are there any turbo repair shops in outer eastern suburbs of melbourne on the recommended list. I haven't removed the hose to check impeller movement yet.but suspect shot bearings.

Check your vac line to the turbo modulator - if this splits and loses vac you’ll get low power and a whine from the turbo. Most places won’t repair a VNT turbo so you may be up for a new one if it’s not something else - I’d also check the engine breather - has this been changed at all to the new style that doesn’t block up? A blocked breather will lead to turbo failure too.

Agree with Gav, if the filter has been replaced then have a good look at ALL the vacuum hoses.

Mine lost boost and was whining, replaced the vac hoses to the turbo side, 12 months problem returned. Went crazy removing stuff:
    Turbo - looked perfect.
Inlet manifold looking for leaks - nill - but found more vacuum hoses under there and one actually fell apart when touched.

If the turbo looks good (visual inspection of blades both sides - spins nicely - no marks from rubbing ect ect) then replace all the vacuum hoses - if you have deleted the EGR, there's significant length of vac hose + solenoid that can be removed. Unfortunately the inlet manifold has to come off to get to most of them easily, but that sounds a lot worse than it is. While you got it off clean it out - that job is PITA

I bought a vac pump with gauge of ebay for about $17 - handy to be able to test it all out...

Pas, just thinking, if it is growling when could it maybe an exhaust leak in the system, and when it gets hot the metal expands and closes the leak gap and the noise is not as noticable?

No, I wouldn't have thought so... It's unlikely to be generating any boost - maybe you have a sensor that is cactus?

That would likely be the absolute pressure reading. 1 atmosphere is 14.7psi....add that to any number and it becomes pressure above atmospheric; in other words boost pressure.
