I don’t know but sounds like a test to find a leak in the induction system.

I had this problem with my 3.6 L tdv8 it turned out to be due to wear in the bush on the clutch clusters. This allowed a pressure drop in the fluid thus coming up with an error message and then going into limp home mode.

I had the the transmission rebuilt and no problems since.

It only occurred when it was under extreme load such as going up a hill and only a particular times

It seems to be an ongoing fault in the z f gearbox. It seems to be Appearing in Ford Falcons

The gearbox fault where there is insufficient pressure for clutch E is due to ZF fitting white-metal stator bushes instead of the previous bronze bushes in all 6-speed gearboxes made from early 2008 until finally reverting to bronze bushes around 2012. The problem seems to be avoided with frequent oil changes, presumably to remove the fine metal particles before their concentration gets too high. Changing the oil late appears to make the problem much worse, causing the gearbox to fault on even very light throttle, as occurred with my 2010 3.0 D4.

    Hi
Just wondered if you can remember what fault message was showing on the message centre just before you went into limp mode ... i.e. engine related or transmission related message?

The gearbox fault causes gearbox instrument cluster messages and the fault codes are any combination of P0729 to P0735, P0783, P2702 to P2704.

    Thanks Graeme.
The fault codes originally logged on the report from the LR technician on my vehicle were 'PO23D-22 for Manifold Absolute Pressure'. I guess it's something to do with the engine rather than transmission. Transmission was serviced/flushed etc about 35000 kms ago ... seems to change gears very smoothly.

I have had three TDV8 (2008) now that have experienced the same fault. In each case it was about the time that I was towing a van (or just after). Under heavy load, or high revs, the pressure in the intercooler hoses increase and with higher temperatures the hose splits. The hose directs compressed air to the cooler out near the radiator and then returns to the turbocharger.

On each occasion the split has been in the left hand hose (viewed from the front of the vehicle) and cannot be seen unless you remove the hose, as it is on the underside.

Two clips hold the hose in place and it is easy to remove.

The last time that it happened, I was away from a Landrover dealer and had the van on the back. So I was forced to carry out a quick repair to keep moving. Removed the hose, found the split, cleaned it up to try to remove excess oil, then applied plenty of superglue to the split area and wrapped up the area with a 100mm strip cut from the bottom of an old tee shirt. Followed up with tape that I purchased from a servo and this allowed me to get home. It was about 1,000km, so it was a bit of a nervous trip. One tip could be to try to run the transmission in manual to keep the engine revs down, to avoid high pressure in the intercooler hose.

This has been my experience, which might not be exactly what you have had.

talking to Phil a TRS, a split intercooler hose will not throw a code nor show up as any pressure drop. he said its the silent but deadly killer of these engines.
