    When is a 5l40 not a 5l40?

    Hi All,
I’ve lurked on the forum for a while but haven’t owned a land/range rover in a long time.
I’ve found an L322 I’m interested in buying with the 5l40 gearbox. I have read every thread I can find on swapping this gearbox for a more durable alternative. The consensus appears to be that there is no viable swap available at present.
My question, that I have been unable to find an answer too, can the 5l40 from an alternative, more readily available vehicle, like the holden commodore V6, bolt up to the Range Rover engine?
If not, what is required to make this swap? Is it as simple as a bellhousing swap from the old gearbox onto the replacement unit, or are more serious modifications required?
    Cheers.

It's the end that the NV225 trasfer case bolts up that will give you grief if you're looking at fitting a box from a 2WD. The bellhousing is different too and isn't a straightforward swap as it is machined to match the trannie it is fitted to as far as the pump tolerances go so you can't just bang one from another but I'm sure this wouldn't be a show stopper. You can get the original trans rebuilt to stronger specs but it costs a fortune. If you got the vehicle at a very good price, then maybe worth spending some dollars on.

Oh - welcome to the forum. 👍😊

Thanks Homestar, but thats what I was hoping to avoid. I would be happy enough to throw second hand boxes at the car if it was a simple swap, as I don't anticipate I'll do all that many k's.

So the 2wd 5l40's have a different rear plate or entire housing to the all wheel drive and 4x4 5l40's? That seriously cuts down the list of donor vehicles.

Thanks for the welcome. I've lurked here on and off for some time and it certainly seems like a good community you've built.

It's a great place and there are so many here always willing to help. 😊

The entire rear housing is different and I'm not sure what's involved in swapping them. If you want more info on that, maybe call Rhys from Furious Performance in Sydney (not sure of his number sorry - he is a memeber on here but doesn't post often) - really nice guy and a wealth of knowledge on these boxes - tell him you're from the forum here and he'll happily shoot the breeze with you on the subject.

Thanks for the info Homestar. Definitely doesn't sound like an easy swap, which makes sense given it's not what everyone else is doing.

Hi Justinc, I'm up North, in Launie.

I have had terrible experience with a local SA place which only after I started tearing into things myself found there is subtle differences in the machining of all the bits and bobs which go into the valve block on the RR box compared to your stock commodore box and it will potentially lead to failures very soon down the track also.
