    RR Broken-down AGAIN, sort-of?

    How is this for coincidence.

2004, I am driving south along the country road leading out to my place, in my 2002 L322 RR, and as I crest over a small hill and back off the accelerator, there’s a bang and then a screaming noise like a jet engine but I have no power.

I managed to coast on to someones footpath and the RR got taken away on the back of a truck with a stuffed front drive shaft ( known problem with the early L322 ).

2011, my wife is driving our 2007 TDV8 RR and has just turned on to the same country road, from a side road and again is heading south. She travels about 75m up the same hill, when the alternator fails, causing a catastrophic vehicle failure, just 100m short of where my 2002 broke down.

This time the RR is stuck in the middle of a busy road and it took 2.5 hours to get on the back of a tow truck, AGAIN.

Come forward to 2013 and I am travelling north this time on the same road. I pass where my 2002 broke down. I then pass the 2011 breakdown spot and I drift down the short hill and then start to power up as I climb the next short hill and BANG, once again, heaps of noise and no power.

I again manage to coast over the crest and down into someone’s driveway. And again, this is another tow truck job, as the spline on the drive shaft between the transmission and the transfer case has stripped, because Land Rover forgot to lubricate it while it was being assembled. This was less than 200m from the last breakdown.

Then, yesterday afternoon, travelling north while on my way into town to the post office, I pass where my 2002 RR broke down. and as I crest the hill and approach the 2011 breakdown spot, my steering suddenly becomes very heavy.

The motor has stopped, but there are no messages being displayed, and I have just under a quarter of a tank. All I can do is coast down the hill and into a side road, where there is some off road parking, which I just make.

Once stopped I try cranking the motor for a few minutes, where it would start, run for 2 or 3 seconds and stop again.

I gave up and call the wife to take me to the post office.

We decided to try putting some diesel in the tank, just incase the fuel gauge was iffy. So put 15lts in and tried cranking again. But same as before, crank for a while then it would run for 2 or 3 seconds, then nothing.

Now I was pretty sure this is a self-priming motor but it made no difference, so I call RACQ and 10 minutes later he arrived. Great service.

I told him what had happened and that I added 15lts to the tank and had cranked for ages.

He was not sure if my engine was self-priming so he looked it up and yes it is. He then check all the fuel lines in and under the RR but couldn’t find anything obvious.

He decided to cranking the motor over to see if he could hear anything out of the norm.

He cranks the motor for 5 seconds and it fires up and has not missed a beat since.

He has a chuckle and points at the fuel gauge, which is showing half a tank. There is no way a 100lt tank can be filled to half with just 15lts.

So it’s either a faulty gauge or a stuck fuel sensor.

Anyway I thank him and head for home, and as I drive off, the fuel gauge drops back to a quarter of a tank.

No tow truck this time but what are the odds of 4 deferent breakdowns within a 250m section of the same road?

You better take something like a sacrificial rabbit - I was going to say someone else's RR - and offer it up as a peace offering to whatever devil is hiding in that part of the road

or as suggested - take another road.

    Cheers Ean
