    4.4 TDV8 oil leaks

There are 2 points on this engine that develop oil leaks. One is from o-rings on the turbo oil supply pipe fitting where it is attached to the back of the block and the other is from the combination oil / EGR cooler that is mounted in the V.

The oil pipe's 2 o-rings are not available from LR as a spare part - only a whole new pipe which is quite involved to fit. The later version of the pipe already fitted to my engine is in 2 parts which allows the short section with the head fitting to be removed but unlikely to be worth fitting as people have no difficulty in changing the o-rings on the earlier version. My suggestion is BS611 (for 9mm shaft into 12mm hole) which are readily available in Viton 75. These have been fitted by a couple of owners in the UK and today I got to use the ones that I purchased 18 months ago in anticipation of the originals eventually leaking. Whilst the original o-rings measured to have a slightly smaller cross-section, they were soft compared with the new Viton seals although others have gone hard and cracked. My vehicle is 6 years old and has done 80K kms. The replacement is not difficult with good access once the heater/ac air intake is removed (2 nuts).

The oil cooler leak is almost invariably due to leaking gaskets, either the oil cooler to block gasket LR022903 or the EGR cooler to oil cooler gasket LR077242 rather than a damaged housing so usually an inexpensive repair taking a couple of hours. Mine's not leaking yet but both gaskets will be replaced when it starts to leak. The 4 short rubber hoses connecting the air intake to the inlet manifolds will be replaced at the same time as the original version are prone to failure.

Keep and eye on your coolant bottle for oil contamination as sometimes oil gets into the coolant before leaking down the back of the engine. Knowing the common cause prevents one from thinking that a head gasket has gone.

A correction to my initial post is that the cooler is only an oil cooler, not a combined EGR cooler. The EGR cooler is behind it also in the V.

I have a theory that the filter housing / oil cooler gaskets fail due to excessive heat because the filter housing mounts atop the EGR cooler. The 3.6 TDV8 and the 2.7/3.0 TDV6 filter housing gaskets don't appear to suffer the same problem but their EGR valves and coolers are located elsewhere.

My priority to program-out EGR operation has now jumped a notch or 2.

This is a very useful post - thanks Graeme. I’ve just recently noticed the burning oil smell and suspicious oil drops on the garage floor and I’m confident that the o-rings are the culprit.
However for peace of mind, thought I’d get the gaskets done too following the excellent pictorial guide posted by mm289 on the FFRR forum.
    my questions:
anyone know where I can get the 2 gaskets from in Aus?
anyone know where to find the Viton 75 BS611 o-rings in Aus?
    any/all advice gratefully accepted.

The gaskets can be ordered from any LR dealer and I bought 4 BS611 VIT o-rings from RENSEAL (0397945711) early 2017, although I doubt that I'll need the spares.

Be very careful not to allow any debris into the oil holes in the block as 1 or more will be post filter en-route to the bearings etc without further filtering. At least 1 UK workshop had to supply a new motor after changing the gaskets, presumably because of debris having entered the oil-ways.

Edit - deleted comment re o-ring pipe location - can't be in the cooler as the EGR valve & cooler are behind the oil cooler.

Ok - Job done. Gaskets and o-rings in and all seems well. Took about 5 hours of which about half was spent degreasing and cleaning parts. Hard to get spilled oil out of V, so Still a bit of burning oil smell, but hopefully that goes over the next few days. Thanks for tip on sourcing o rings Graeme. Renhel had them in stock. About $1.40 each plus postage.

I seem to have the same issue but with my MY14 RRS TDV8 HSE....small drops of oil & increasingly noticing burnt oil smell.

Had the car serviced, mentioned this & the dealer (PCB in Adelaide) said that he did see considerable amount of oil on one side of the engine but that he's not seen this before in a TDV8. He mentioned something about replacing something in the V & quoted roughly $2,500 for the job BUT...said he would look into this further.

It's been x2 weeks & I've rung them x3 times & he;s still not returned my calls....I'm worried I'm doing more damage & with school holidays coming up, would like to go for a drive!!

Hopefully it's O' ring but I'm not sure whether this post was in relation to L494 engines or older?

    Cheers
    Matt

PS - I also found this video online, is this the same?
