I got slack in my rack

    Hey Guys,

So I'm just getting my newly acquired 03 V8 Vogue up to speed.

When it had a roadworthy the guy told me my steering rack ends had play in them, so under the car we went. Yes I could agree without removing the boots, sounded fair. So off to Rimmers to get a new pair of rack ends, a couple of tie rod ends and some new boots to boot.

So I'm under the car just about to rip them out and I get my son to wiggle the steering for me. Nope not the rack ends or the ball joints, all is well there.

Looks to me like I have a bit of slack in the rack. Now I haven't had to play with a steering rack yet (steering boxes yes). So my question is can I adjust the lash on the rack without having to pull it out and overhaul or replacing it??

P.S I'm loving the L322 so far but the only thing getting on my tits are the soft touch plastic parts in the interior, that and I don't have wood inside just that horrible silver foundry look.

P.S.S AND the dodgy work from the mechanics that have been looking after the car for the last 8 years. Land Rover specialist? REALLY! but I won't name names. But that is another story I'll post at a later date.

Do not despair. Most men over 60 have this problem. Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra usually fix the problem unless you are diabetic.

    Finally got this sorted

Well after leaving this for too long, I finally got my head into the workshop manual and youtube to sort my wandering steering out.

It was getting noticeably worse on the highway and started to annoy me. Now I know I really need to replace my steering rack but this adjustment will get me a little more time before I need to outlay the coin.

So I jumped under the car, pulled out the rubber insert out of the rack adjuster, tightened it up a bit (too much) with a 17mm socket. It was a bit tight so I backed it off a little and now all good. 2min job. (when you know what you are doing)
One thing I found interesting was that the rubber insert locks the adjuster. I wouldn't have thought that possible but it does. I tried a quick adjustment on the side of the road without removing the rubber plug and it wouldn't turn. Pop out the rubber plug and you are free to adjust it. Weird.
