My spark plugs are under oil!

Been having an erratic idling issue with my 2003 L322. Today I went to change the plugs and the plugs and about 60mm of the bottom of the coils is under oil. Clearly a massive leak in the inner rocker cover gasket.

Has anyone else had this problem with their V8's?

I believe it's not uncommon. I had some oil in mine but not that much.

Yeah pretty common with twin (or quad) cams. I recon that you have found your problem!

You need to replace your rocker cover gaskets. They are cheap as. I have an oil leak from mine and I have the gaskets but just haven't got around to that job yet.But I will.

I've had a few cars that I've looked at that have running issues due to the plugs sitting in a bath of oil. BUT you only had a bank misfire not a identified cylinder, so maybe, maybe not.

So I ordered all of the gaskets and seals from Ritters in Burwood, but when on the phone to them they suggested that this may actually not be the issue. They commented that the most common issue leading to engine issues on these early cars are the engine breather hoses. They reckon they basically break down until they either rot off the engine, or collapse internally.

So I've been sitting on RAVE for an hour now and can't locate the area that relates to engine ventilation.

Anybody had hose issues that needed rectifying on an early L322?

Have you replaced your PCV valve and the 4 hoses and 1 vacuum line from it? if blocked they will weep oil and become blocked affecting the engine. Also the plastic pipe connectors are prone to breaking from the heat. This generally a forgotten item when servicing the V8.

I presume you are talking about the seal under the black plastic cover (6C527 in the pic below). If so, I can't see how that can allow oil into the spark plug wells. That cover seals the spark plugs/coils from external stuff coming in. I suspect oil gets in via leaking seals round the valve cover bolts (6K568B in pic).

Yes, I have this now. Am changing the PCV and cam cover gaskets. Did the gaskets (and removal of oil around plugs) fix your misfire?
