BMW V8 timing chains - should I be worried

G'day Peps

So my 03 V8 has a little rattle for about half a second when I start it in the morning. I'm not too worried about as yet, OR should I be?

I've had a XJ8 Jag in the past and I was always listening for the cam chain rattle when she started up because of the issues with the AJ26.

Do the BMW V8s have the same issue or is this normal with old age?

Hey Steve,

My Bmw L322 does the same thing. I took it to my mechanic (Bmw guy) and he said it can either be the plastic timing chain guides starting to disintegrate and thus a little bit of slap on startup or the vanos getting a little sticky. He said it’s fine - but if it gets bad (ie constant) then replace the offending part.

Take off the lower sump cover (easy to do) and check for plastic bits. Replacing the timing chain guides looks like a big job - even more so to replace the chains.

A few years ago when I had an L322 the cost for repairs when timing chain guides fragmented was around $9000 it ended 30 plus years of rangie ownership
