    Clonking front struts

Hello - a few years ago there was discussions around the issue with clonking coming from the top of the front strut assemblies that several of us had ended up with as a result of replacing the originals.

I can't find where that got too - did anyone come up with a solution / repair?

From what I understand there was a batch of these struts with bearing issues and it seems like it affected most if not all the brands. I fitted Delphi and The Airbag Man confirmed they had the issue with the Dunlops they supply.

After 6 years of clonking I've had enough. If I need to replace the struts to solve this - what is the current view on which replacements to get??

Airbag Man is about $1200 for the pair which is tempting given a local warranty.

Harlie: It seems you did not get much news from your post. However I am interested to know where you got to with this as I have the same issue.
My car has 195.000km om clock
I replaced the struts with DUNLOP branded items back in 2016 and the front suspension bushings and ball joints have been replaced since.

Struts have done 35,000 km and bushings etc have been in for 25,000 km.
Rear "Ball joints" as L/Rover call them but more of knuckle joints have also been replaced and all rear bushings closely inspected.

I have always thought that the Dunlop strut product is much noisier than the originals in fact they clunk a bit.
It may be my imagination but it seems to be worse when the shockers are cold.
I get in my wife's little Jap hatch and it is whisper quiet.
Then back in L322 and disappointment sets in and I feel like buying another little Jap hatch!.
Have had the car since new and it is still a very clean vehicle but disappointing to drive with clunking suspension.

If anyone else has good info on this subject please chime in.

Have you gained any knowledge and/or experience with these or other branded products?

If the shock absorber and mounting points are OK, then I think it will be the bushes

    87 County:
My post actually advises that all bushings and ball joints (including sway bar links) have been done.
Made absolutely no difference when I did them.
Everything I removed at that time was in excellent condition.

Mine had a rattle that sounded to be coming from the top of the RH front strut since it was purchased with 18K kms of city driving. The rattle was gone 70k kms later after replacing the front arm after the ball-joint was found to be loose. The looseness was only spotted when turning left and right whilst stationary with weight on the wheels which caused the right wheel to jump when turned left a lot. None of my previous prying with a tyre lever revealed the loose ball-joint.

Perhaps one of your new ball-joints wasn't good from new.
