Steering column issue that may be linked to ignition switch

    2003 Build TD6 L322
A few weeks ago the key refused to turn but after a while I got the car going with second key.
Thought the key battery may have been an issue so replaced it only to find that the old battery had full voltage so not the issue.
Car behaved all the way from Melbourne to Brisbane and return.
Today, once again the key would not turn in the ignition lock but on further attempts it worked.
I now have a resounding "CLUNK" when the steering column retracts.
From what I find on this site it does appear the wallet may have to open wide!
Comments from those who have had steering column issues will be gratefully received.

The old adage about R/Rover ownership:
You always have something to do at weekends when you own a Rangie!

whitedog: an update on the problem. Since my post the steering column stopped retracting. The tilt works fine. I just pulled the lower trim panel to get a look at things. A piece of the plastic clip that holds the reach motor in place fell down then the reach motor followed still connected to wiring. The reach motor still runs but it is not going to do much until I get it secured again. Hopefully this will be on the more economical scale of fixes. I will also graphite the ignition tumblers as you suggested.

An update on steering column issue

I have ordered a new bracket for reach motor.
I checked the local dealer and only available with new reach motor at AUD1092.
Ordered a new bracket off Ebay for AUD93.00
I can put the trim panel back in place and drive the car until part arrives.
I was surprised that Land Rover did not want to sell me a complete column as the Workshop Manual only advises on how to remove and replace the complete assembly

28th May: Today I connected my FAULTMATE and found I was able to reconfigure operation of steering column motors.
Now the column stays put according to seat pre-set buttons 1, 2 or 3 and does not retract each time the ignition key is turned to OFF.
This should save a lot of wear and tear on the system

I recently had the same issue if you look down the L322 comments page you will find what I did to fix it. A note on the repair I was told ( by a AULRO member) to check battery charge and had charged the battery fully according to my charger, however the battery died a week later so I cannot rule out battery as original fault. To that end I would go to super cheap or who ever is local and have the battery tested it may save you a lot of work.

Reach motor bracket for steering column

I will not be the first to have a broken plastic bracket on an L322 steering column reac motor which seems to have been the cuase of issues I was having with both the column and ignition lock.
What will be of interest is obtaining the new plastic bracket.
Advice from a local dealer was that the part was only supplied with new motor at a cost of near $1100. The plastic bracket that I ordered through Ebay arrived today.
It came from a well known authorised Land Rover dealer in UK complete with Land Rover packaging and Land Rover part number QYH500030 and cost me a bit of $90 with postage.
Why I could not get in Australia is certainly a mystery.
I will install shortly but whilst the reach motor has been disconnected I have had no issues whatsoever.
A cheap fix on my RR makes for a great day.

Gippslander: Thx for comments but no issues with the battery

p38arover: yes that is the same item.
    Where is that illustration from?
Now that we have 2 part numbers for the same item it becomes even more starnge why I could not purchase in Australia

I picked that pic from the MicroCat L322 pages. That part no. I mentioned isn't an LR part no., it references the correct part number further down the page (not shown).
