I would personally keep using Dex6. The 5l40e is an old transmission comparatively, and there are good Dex6 rated oils from Nulon to Penrite.
I believe that the GM5L40E transmission would have had Dexron 3 in it when it left the factory "sealed for life"
All rather relative to what life one is talking about and we all know that after transmission rebuilds.
When I had the transmission re-built it was filled with Dexron 6 and has had one 40,000km interval since using the same fluid.
It is now approaching the end of the second 40K interval and wanting a service facility closer to home I got a quote from another shop where the labour and filter kit look quite ok as far as pricing goes.
I know I could do this myself but I may get down on the workshop floor and not get up again as age is making me weary.
However I have been quoted for the use of "LONG LIFE AUTO OIL GREEN" at $35.80 per litre.
I probably would not go for that as the tranny gets a scehduled service every 40K.
However does anyone know what this oil is?
Asking the question based on curiosity only as I will probably stick with Dexron 6 unless educated otherwise as I will keep doing a regular service.
Now if we think $35.80 is expensive one could always go for Land Rover transmission fluid Part Number STC4862 at a mere $63.75 for a 1 litre bottle.
Of course you do get it in a bottle (plastic) with the name of your chosen vehicle marque!

STC4862
M57 D30 3.0 Diesel, Automatic Transmission
GM 5L40, Texaco ETL 7045E
I found this years ago on Ffrr, just to add to the confusion
It’s understandable how confusion can arise; for example if we consider the ‘identical’ powertrain in the 2000-2003 BMW X5 i.e. M57 engine coupled to GM 5L40-E transmission :
The GM 5L40-E transmission has two BMW designations – one is the A5S360R (360Nm capacity) and the other is the higher rated A5S390R (390Nm capacity). These two transmissions use different fluids. The 360 uses Texaco ETL-7045E (BMW p/n 83 22 0 026 922) - i.e. the same fluid specified by LR for the Range Rover - and the 390 uses Texaco ETL-8072B (BMW p/n 83 22 0 024 359).
The BMW M57 engine in the early diesel Range Rover produces 390Nm maximum torque so you would expect it to have the uprated gearbox like the X5 does. However Land Rover specify ETL-7045E fluid – the one for the 360Nm transmission.
Just to add further to the confusion, on earlier BMW cars fitted with the same 5L40-E box the fluid specified was Dexron III.
Apparently the ETL-8072B fluid for the 390 has now been superseded by Dexron IV.

I had my transmission fully overhauled by Endurance Automatic Transmission in Dandenong and they use Dexron 6 if you are in Melbourne give them a ring and ask for Lyle great service and very reasonable prices.
Gippy
Lots of other places you can get them sorted out than there, nothing more to say.
As one who has consumed many many many bottles of trans fluid for this autobox, don't skimp......
Put dex 3 in it and I can assure you it wont last 10,000k's.
Currently the Texaco stuff is in mine, but its due for a flush soon as its nearly at 75k worth of usage, which is probably a bit too much for some peoples appetites.

G'day Guys,
I've been using Valvoline Maxlife ATF in all my gearboxes for years now and really like it. I also really like the price. It is compatible with the DexVI, 074 5E, and up to Lifeguard 8 for the ZF boxes. At $174 for 20L with free delivery from Supercheap you can't go past it imo.
