I'd drive it for a few days sticking around civilisation but making sure that the oil gets hot then if it's still OK assume no significant damage.

    Thanks Laurie and Graeme.

I’m getting the car and camper towed hm. Parts will take a bit of time to organise and then fit.

Hopefully will be able to organise Plan B for NT holiday.

Will fix car sometime after I get back.

I will see how it goes with some new LifeGuard6. The trans was due for a flush anyway, having the replacement 6hp26 from a facelift L322. I also need to put a sonnax kit through the valve body, which is from the original trans.

Thanks for the suggestion. It would be hard going back into the 110 for a 7,000km return trip after the L322.

There are a few reasons not to use the 110, incl that I would really need to go over it and replace a few things to get it ready for that sort of a trip. Not big things, mainly to tighten the steering up. It would make it no worries, but I don’t think I would.

A lot of heat there, to melt that plastic. Is the compressor clutch etc replaceable in situ? Just thinking it would save having to de-gas and then re-gas the A/C system. I look forward to finding out what was the initial cause of the failure.

That’s metal and heavier than it looks. The rippled area is grease.

I will look into the compressor options after we get back.

The compressor costs about $700 delivered for Hella brand, rather than $2800 quoted by Oz LR.

    6HP26 Transmission leak/dump

I’m currently hiring a Holden Trailblazer, in the NT as the L322 replacement which unluckily failed on day one of this trip (arguably not unexpected from a 12 year old complex vehicle).

I’m quite impressed with its VM 2.8 diesel motor which delivers 500Nm of torque at 2000rpm. Matched to its 6 speed box it only sat at 2000 rpm when doing about 125km/hr. Coil springs all round and substantial drive train incl LSD rear and dual range transfer case.

The Apple airplay is really good.

We have trailblazers at work here ! The driveline is the only thing that I like. It will go into DPF Regen without warning, have had smoke coming out from under the bonnet at traffic lights We thought we had plastic smouldering under the bonnet, till we realised what was going on. Depending on the model; our poverty pack versions wallow thru corners, and the exhaust guards rattle continually.

Any way I hope you and the family are finally enjoying your trip away, after a poor start.

    Laurie
