Interesting Laurie. Do you have the 2017 model at work? I suppose your work cars will be mostly doing suburban kms?

I understand the 2018 model had some upgrades. The hire car is 1 year old and we’ve done over 1000km so far. It’s no RRV but seems reasonable bang for buck.

We took it through a few creek crossings, with rocky bottom and about 500mm deep. It coped well with this task. All important stuff under the bonnet is quite high, the official wading limit is 600mm, which is conservative I think given under bonnet stuff is so high. It’s also a fairly uncluttered engine bay.

It doesn’t do corrugations very well. The rear feels very stiff and doesn’t soak up corrugations like a LR.

We have both 2018/19 models; both wagons and utes. Tap the door skins and then the body panels ! Door skins a very light metal,( weight saving [bigsad]) ours have numerous dents from equipment. My old work 02 D2 kills them for ride, both on and off road ! I found the steering a bit vague, no real feel for the road. They tend to float at higher speeds[bigwhistle]. If you could get one cheap, and re-do the suspension it would be worth it, though the front console is finicky if both of you want a coffee when travelling [bighmmm]

The more you drive other vehicles the more you love the L322 [biggrin], I haven't driven a L405 yet, so can't compare them to the L322; they are supposedly even better again[bigsmile]

I’m starting to think age is my vehicle’s most limiting factor for touring. Maybe if I do this repair, and then change all hoses, power steer and water pumps it will be lower risk. I might follow Big Jon’s lead and remove the EGRs and cooler hoses.

The plastic connectors for fuel hoses have also started to fail. At least you can manage that risk with some hose and hose clamps.

I’m counting on close attention to maintenance as my main defence to turbo failure. But I’m fast approaching the 300k km mileage where CS Brisie’s tdv8 failed. I’m sure that L322 also wa well maintained.

How did you get on with the transmission repair? Have you managed to look at it yet?
I've just carried out a transmission service on my MY08 TDV8, as new owner not sure when it was last services. Metal pan, ZF fluid. Was only a pan drop oil change as I only had 7L of fluid. Still find some gear shifts in to 2nd at grandpa speeds are not completely smooth at times, so wondering about a Sonnax kit for the valve body. Doesn't bother me how the vehicle currently drives, but being a new owner unfamiliar with this vehicle/tranny I don't know if this is a big warning sign.
Planning a touring trip from Brisbane to Tassie in December 2019/January 2020, so I have a few months to get everything serviced.
I'm in Brisbane too, so if you're happy for a chin wag on the weekend sometime I'd be happy to drop over your way ;)

This is a 2nd or 3rd car so the repair isn’t urgent, and is in line after a few other higher priority jobs. I’ve got a week off in Oct with my son and was planning on getting into it then. Being a lease vehicle there are also tax advantages if its unavailable for use because of mechanical failure.

I’ve had a quick look and the AC compressor and trans cooler pipe all looks very accessible.

I would be interested in catching up and hearing about the trans oil change process and where you sourced a filter. I would like to change that before I refilled the trans with fluid.

My changes were smooth even at 290,000km. The trans was replaced with a used unit which now has about 60,000km, but the valve body/mechatronic is original.

That's fair enough regarding the repair work. It all takes time especially if doing it yourself.


We still have our old trusty Hilux wagon which at some point we will sell once I feel more comfortable with how the Rangie is going. It's currently our backup if we have any reliability issues while getting to know the (new to us) car.


The transmission is really smooth in all conditions other than just really slow speed with minimal to no load. I thought some new fluid may help, but didn't really seem to have made any remarkable change. I haven't reset any adaptations yet either, as I've read mixed opinions about doing so with high mileage vehicles.

The old oil wasn't too bad actually, certainly darker than brand new ZF fluid but wasn't really black like I've seen come out of the same tranny through online videos. Nothing significant on the magnets either. The service kit came from 4wd Industries, they had a 10% off discount at the time so was around 565 for the genuine ZF one. Refilling to the specified level, I put in a little over 6L of fluid.

Mickd, i'm having very similar issues with my ZF6. Shifts are smooth with no juddering but occasionally get shift issues with slow high load (up hill or from take off ) between the 1-2 shift, i will be going down the valve body rebuild as EricV6SE did on his D4.

Yes, the valve body rebuild was what I was thinking too. Given the relative ease it sounded like it was too do. I need to do a little more research and find out a good place to source the necessary parts.

It might be a chance for me to do another oil change sooner than later to further remove some of the old oil in the transmission that is now mixed with the new ZF.

Don't bother with any valve body rebuilds etc UNTIL you get a set of accumulator fill values, and adaptions read. You may be wasting time and money....

Thanks Justinc. I certainly don't want to throw money at something not with repairing. Which is why I want to do a little more research. How much experience have you had with the Zf6 boxes. Anything else worth considering?
