The trans cooler is easy to see, remove the plastic undertray. The pipework is pretty protected, and it is unusual to burst any of the fittings, hope it isn't too much of an ordeal?
I’m on day 1 of a 4 week trip.
Late this arvo I got a trans fault and lost drive. I coasted to a stop with motor still running. After stopping I noticed some mist (not really smoke) so switched off the motor.
Popped the bonnet to find some oil substance sprayed about, then noted the trail to were I stopped and after stopping a pool of oil formed under the motor.
The L322 has dropped its trans fluid. It’s coming from under the engine somewhere. I’ve checked the engine oil which is full. So definitely not engine oil.
So I’m thinking I have a split hose between the trans and trans cooler or a split in the trans cooler.
Anyone have any experience with these symptoms? Thanks.

Thanks JC. Are the fittings the plastic type similar to fuel filter connectors?
I’m trying to work out if I can get a hydraulic place in Roma to fix this or do I buy a genuine pipe complete. Thanks.

Ive had the car towed to repairer.
A face plate on the aircon compressor wheel has let loose and hit the transmission line to the cooler. The repairer is saying there is a burning smell from the transmission.
I lost drive quite quickly, stopped within about 1 minute, and a heap of fluid drained out under the engine after shutting down the motor. Is the trans likely to be damaged?
Given the age and miles of the car, and so its value in good running order, Im questioning the value of a trans rebuild. It would end up being a $9k repair bill with the trans, aircon, new drive belt, tensioners, trans/cooler line.

The amount of oil on exhaust etc ,I'm not suprised there is a burning smell. Call the bluff. New trans line ,compressor clutch ,tranny oil and try and enjoy the rest of your trip.

If its of any interest,, the 4HP often survives an on road fluid dump....

Thanks Pedro. 6HP26 is a completely different design.
But from my limited knowledge/understanding, I tend to agree it should survive a fluid dump. Once fluid levels drop the pump will stop providing pressure to the valve body and series of clutch plates should disengage. Which results in no drive.
So the only possible damage I can think of is to the pump if it ran dry. But I don’t think it had run completely dry as oil was still pouring out after the motor stopped.
In any case I think it’s too much risk to drive it to Darwin. I don’t fancy a breakdown on the Barkly HW. I would need to drive it for a few months before being confident the fluid dump had no impact on the transmission.

Not something anyone of us would like to have happen.
I agree with theelms66 I would clean engine bay, trans etc replace with 2nd hand A/C compressor and oil line and try it. You could live monitor the trans with your ID tool and see if the readouts are out of the normal limits. I would also send Phil at Ffrr a text and ask his opinion on the loss of oil from the trans, regarding possible damage and risks. He is the guru when it comes to these transmissions.
I never heard of a fault like you had with the A/C compressor before
Hope it all works out for you, so your trip is not over yet, just delayed.
