I ended up buying a rubber floor jack adaptor pad, to stop damage to sills etc. I also brought one for my wife's Skoda VRS as it's a shocker to find a strong and safe jacking point except for the OE points.

Something I have spotted is that my now-ceased practice of jacking with a trolley jack under the front arm has the potential to cause the ball to stretch the thin metal plate holding pressure on the ball thus making the ball loose. I have since reshaped the plate on the removed arm by driving a socket with the same contact area as the recess and will refit the arm to check if the ball is indeed tight again. If not then I'll move the good bush to the non-genuine arm.

Hi Graeme,
Have you tried putting a length of timber that covers the Y section then lifting with trolley jack.
Would that put the ball joints out?
I can get a jack under the outer edge of the sub-frame but my old, cheapie trolley jack doesn't have much height so I now go to off-road height and use a tall bottle jack. A block of wood with the trolley jack might be a better option though.
I'm not concerned that the weight of the wheel and hub might damage the ball-joint but supporting more than half the weight of the front of the car on the ball-joint is bound to stretch the thin metal backing.

Another year and another set of bushes now destroyed, causing wandering under brakes and inconsistent steering while cornering. The gap between the centre and the bump-stop is now half an inch whilst parked.
Prior to fitting the new Lemforder bushes their rear air gap will be filled with a flexible sealant (trying Sikaflex Marine Flex) to provide more support when the wheels are pulling forwards, particularly when pounding along on fast gravel roads when the wheels would be moving fore and aft a lot. If they're too harsh then I'll start drilling holes in the sealant until the ride is acceptable.
