LCD repairs; instrument cluster and MID radio

I had a 2004 L322 at my place over the weekend...

Was meant to have left last Thursday, but things don't always go to plan...

It had the typical bad LCD in the instrument cluster, the owner asked me to fix it.

    Yeah no worries.

But the LCD in the radio is also stuffed, can you fix this too?

Never tried but yeah, you can get repair kits for them too, so why not?

Well when it comes to the MID, after several attempts, my advice is don't bother, just put in an Android unit instead.

6 hours and three ribbon cables later, this is the best I could do...

Still has some missing pixels. And it's a nightmare job compared to the instrument cluster, never again...

Not that everything went smoothly with the instrument cluster either. It's perfect now, but...

The little bush with the spring around it slipped on the speedo shaft while trying to remove the pointer... LCD repairs; instrument cluster and MID radio despite using the correct locking tool and following the procedure to the letter...

What can go wrong, will go wrong...

I ended up having to buy another instrument cluster, to take the speedo motor from it, had to wait for it to come in over the weekend.

Good news is, if this happens to you, I now have some spares, the motors are the same for all four gauges...

Fix this for me - 2007 RRS - same as a mid level D3 radio. I have found people in the UK who can fix the L322 LCDs but none to do the RRS/D3 radio.

I was lucky and didn't have that problem but it's the reason I haven't offered to do it for anyone else.

    Well as it turns out...

The screen on this panel was good from memory.

I think it was probably just some one-in-a-million fluke, because the all pointers on the other cluster came off without issue.

One interesting thing, the spare / donor instrument cluster I got was from July 2006 (from markings on the components inside) despite it being a YAC501230PVA which is for L322's up to 2005MY / VINs to 5Axxxxxx.

Despite it looking the same on the outside, the ribbon on the LCD display is different from the earlier / original ones. So that one could not have been repaired with the replacement ribbon kit, but the reason I got this one as a spare is that the LCD was missing pixels, and the guys were not interested in trying to fix it. From there outside there was no way to know that it was different on the inside, I mean the p/n is for the first series L322.

The motors for the gauges are the same though, as is just about everything else, but the connection of the LCD to the board is totally different, and I see a few different components on the board as well.

Maybe it was a "new" one that was fitted under warranty or something in 2006 and LR / VDO had already changed the design to try and stop the failing pixel problem.

    From the parts catalogue

VINs up to 5Axxxxxx are all the same
    VINs 6Axxxxxx are unique version
    VIN's 7Axxxxxx to 9Axxxxxx are different again

Good fortune that the motors on the gauges are the same and it saved my arse, but if I had been planning to fix the LCD in this one, I would have been in for a shock...

    G'day Cambo,
Does the instrument cluster have a VIN same as the vehicle or are they interchangable?
    Cheers

Yes the VIN is stored in the cluster, but it doesn't seem to be a critical thing, if you swap a different one it won't stop it from working or the car from driving. The LCS Configuration (vehicle configuration) should be loaded into a replacement cluster but if it's come from a similar spec vehicle doesn't seem to be all that critical either.

Other models like L319 have the keys/immobiliser data programmed into the cluster, but the L322 doesn't, there's a separate Immobilisation ECU in the L322.

Oh, this has opened some old wounds. - Had the same issue with mine, instrument cluster was easy, MID was a freaking nightmare and I ended up with about the same results. Lived with it until I sold the vehicle. 😇

    I need a drink now... 😁
