    Low range locked

Went to drive the Rangie today, heard a chime, message board, tranfer case in neutral. Parked the car, turned it off, restart and no gears, selected low range, engaged and now can not select high range. Any thoughts and help would be appreciated.

    Hi
In the first instance it might be worth sticking a spare 5A fuse in position 37 Main Fuse Box and then taking it out again to see if you can reset the shift motor. Fit fuse in Pos:37, Auto in neutral switch ignition on then switch off, remove fuse. Switch ignition back on and select high and low about 3 times cycling the selector switch If you can drive vehicle then cycle hi/lo switch 3 times above 10km/h

If that doesn't work check that the connections underneath to the transfer box are connected and " CLEAN" ! I would almost bet it's never been used till you tried, so just check the basics first, as there are no error messgaes.
If no luck try to reset the Transfer box ECU !

Try resetting the Transfer Box ECU doing the following...

    1. Turn the ignition key to the on (first) (not start) position.
    2. Press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.
    3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
    4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

This clears the Potentiometer settings and typically allow you to go into low range. If this works, then you need to go between low and high range 3 times. The first is from a dead stop and the second two are while moving around 8-16 kl/hr (you still need to shift into neutral while moving).

    Good luck

    G'day Laurie,
In the first para you mention taking the fuse out and replacing it with a spare fuse, turn ign on then off (is this to first lock not start?)
Then remove fuse and cycle 3 times. Do I replace the old fuse or leave the fuse out for the cycle and drive?
    Cheers

If there was no fuse fit one
    main gearbox in neutral
    turn on ignition don't start
    turn off ignition remove fuse
    turn on ignition don't start
cycle hi/lo switch leave in high
Now drive and cycle 3 times
You can replace the fuse back into Pos 37 if it was originally fitted

Sorry for the confusion I couldn't find my original post from a while back to reference from.

There was an article by an L322 owner in LRO some time ago. The bloke had this problem and the fix AFAIR was to remove the contact cover of the transfer case and slightly move the contacts as they were worn.
It appeared that the cover was pretty easy to access.

    Hi Laurie & PhilipA,
I tried part one of your fix Laurie and managed to get it into high range. All good till I reached 100kph and off it went again, transferbox in neutral, I could still drive the vehicle but it was locked in 5th gear, so pretty slow off the lights with a trailer on.
Stopped the vehicle and did the ECU reset, all went good for a while and then message, trans failsafe prog. Car still drove ok, stopped to refuel and drive home towing the trailer at 110kph and all was fine.
when I move off, towing or not message, slowdown and at times check headlight dip beam both of these have been occurring for a while now? Thoughts?
Thank you both for all your assistance this far.
    Cheers

    PhilipA,
Is that cover inside the vehicle or underneath?
I'm heading to Brisbane on Sunday and will attempt to get under the vehicle and find and clean all terminals on the transfer case.
