I also have just been through the exercise of looking for a more suitable towing vehicle than my D3 2.7.
Initially went chasing a 4.4 hoping to get the 8speed amd maybe more grunt and the reported better fuel economy.
Just could not find a 4.4 in the Km's and price range that I thought they should be.
However in talking with a couple of LR experts who spend their days fixing other peoples Land Rovers, they were emphatic that although the 4.4 and the 8 speed is a nice combination, they have found the 3.6 motor to be the more reliable. Both reported failures of 4.4 engines (possibly linked to EGR's and turbo drain pipe issues).
Trans guy said that 8 speed is smoother and a stronger box, but that the 6 speed can certainly handle the pulling, and if any issues they fit an upgraded torque convertor as they do when using the 6 speed behind monster V8 petrol engines
Eventually got an 08 2 owner 185,000k with full service history by the one service company, remapped ECU, EGR's closed off, trans services every 60k from new, for $23,000.
Front suspension and all airlegs changed out in recent past. Metallic paint, unmarked exterior, interior unmarked (doubtful if rear seats used). Everything 100% working
Got the Brembo's swapped out for 4.4 calipers and 18" rims fitted.
The audio/sound/sat nav is being upgraded to include Apple/Android, phone integration and retain all origional features for $1550.
Economy is checking out at 10.1L per 100k about town with frequent stop start, and highway mode appears to be 7.9L 100k loafing along at 110kph.
Have found it to be very smooth and the re-map adds a lot of torque.
So far, I'm very happy with the 3.6, but it's still a Land Rover, so the list of possible catastrophies are endless.
