    tyre recall and recommendations

I got a phone call from the tyre bloke about two months ago stating that the Cooper AT3 4S tyres we bought off him two years ago have been recalled and Coopers will replace free of charge. A week later I followed him up to be told he made a mistake and the tyres were not in the recall. Apparently they can develop bulges and separation of the tyre sidewall. I meant to check the date of manufacture but never got around to it. All 5 of them are 2718 (27th week 2018 year)

I had my sister up and she followed us into town and she noted that the rear wheel was wobbling. When I got back home I found this

I am a bit annoyed about this, my wife just did a 650km round trip to Melbourne last week on these.

Looks like they will be replaced but they are a bit big at 275/55/20 with the recommendation being 255/50/20. the vehicle does go up the back and can get into some slippery conditions. I cant seem to get decent AT tyres for 20" Rims!! Any hints?

Edited for spelling, I know Ron will read this!!

Also General Grabber AT3, I have them in 255/55/20 and they seem pretty good. Just a little more sidewall than the 50 series. But no matter what anyone tells you they will not fit in the spare wheel well while inflated and even at 10psi they really need some mods to the plastic to fit.

Is 255/55R20 too large for the well once the plastic has been trimmed? I trimmed the left side plastic to get 275/55R20 to fit at full pressure but sitting on blocks about 1" high to prevent the tyre from becoming wedged in. It worked for both BFG AT KO2 (LT) and Pirelli AT+.

Thanks for the replies. I see BFGS K02's come in 275/55/20 now which is what I originally wanted. Getting them might be another story all together. For those commenting on fitting in the spare wheel well, I can confirm that if you deflate the 275/55/20 and use a rubber mallet you can get it to sit in the tyre well with trimming of the plastics. When I changed the tyre I wondered how on earth I would ever get it out considering the effort I put in to stuff it in there. It actually came out quiet easily which surprised me. Whether temperature and time and bumps made a difference I don't know.
For clarification the tyre shop was acting on COOPERS advice where he was told they were to be recalled and then they were not. He is as annoyed as me. The end result is that AT3 XLTs will be fitted at the same size. Apparently Coopers want me to pay the difference between the AT3 4S and XLT. Good on em. I might send them a bill for my time and fuel considering I have to drive 1.5 hrs away to get it sorted.

I guess that is fair enough really - like for like. At least they didn't try to charge you pro-rata on the tyre wear, that wouldn't surprise me from Cooper.

Re available sizes, for tyres we often have different sizes available compared to OS markets. When I was looking yesterday at your tyre sizes for example, I could see that we can get Pirelli AT+ and ATR, where the US market could only get AT+. When the Pirelli ATR was first released they wouldn't bring into Aus the tyre size that I needed (285/75-16), and I found that importing was reasonably straight forward from companies like tirerack.com. I can see you're all sorted, but if needed there are ways of getting other tyre options, but you might have to pay a little more.

The old tyres had done about 33,000km so about half their life (they are guaranteed for 70K km. The At3's are guaranteed for 80K km) I still don't want to talk about the price for replacement. I thought it was going to be $150 all up not per tyre. They sweetened the deal for 5 tyres but I still walked out about $700 lighter in the back pocket.
