    Check worn ball joints

Ball joints are easy to check. Have someone rock the steering back and forward (engine off) just enough to pick up some pressure - while you look or feel if there is any movement between the steering arm and the track rod at each side.

Clunk could also be the strut mount rubbers up top - they could be quite perished by now on a vehicle of that age, could also be the strut itself it it’s never been replaced - the rebound on old struts can make a noise when they are shagged.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I'm old school on these things, if one side has worn out as far as I'm concerned the other side can't be far behind.
